Arne Slot became the first Liverpool manager in history to win eight of his first nine games, but the Dutchman says his team must improve if they are to achieve their goals this season.

The Reds defeated Italian side Bologna with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah in both halves to make it two wins from two on their return to the Champions League.

But although it was an almost perfect start for Slot, he thinks there are even higher levels to reach. “You will never achieve perfection, you always strive for it, but you will never achieve it,” he said.

‘We can improve, we must improve. That’s clear. There are positives from tonight and the other games, but there was a period in the game where we (lost) control. They threatened us.’

Tougher tests lie ahead after the international break for Liverpool, with games against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Brighton all taking place in the league before the end of November.

And Slot says he’s not drawing any conclusions from becoming the first Reds boss in history to win eight of his first nine. “I don’t draw many conclusions from this,” he added. ‘But it’s fun.

‘So many great managers have worked here and done special things. I hope the only thing people remember me by isn’t the manager who won eight of his first nine games! I hope to be able to do even more special things. But it says a lot about how Jurgen left this club. But again, hoping to do more.”

The win over Bologna maintained Liverpool’s perfect run in the Champions League this season after they beat AC Milan 3-1 in the opener.

Liverpool’s attention quickly turns to an afternoon match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Eagles are winless after six league games and are coming off a 2-1 defeat to Everton.
