Arne Slot issues warning to Liverpool stars after rollercoaster victory over Southampton sent Reds eight points clear of Man City at the top of the Premier League

  • Liverpool moved eight points clear to the top of the table with victory at St Mary’s
  • Mo Salah scored a double in the second half to complete a dramatic comeback win
  • Arne Slot does not believe that his players will be carried away by the leadership

Arne Slot has dismissed the idea that Liverpool will get carried away with an eight-point lead in the Premier League title race.

Mo Salah scored twice as the Reds went from 2-1 down to beat a spirited Southampton team, who were in the lead after Mateus Fernandes and Adam Armstrong canceled out Dominik Szoboszlai’s opener.

With Manchester City slumping, it means Liverpool have breathing space at the top ahead of a titanic battle between the two teams at Anfield on Sunday. But Slot says his team remains level-headed.

“It’s nice to be in this position, but we certainly won’t get carried away,” he said. “We also know what he has to put in to get these leads and wins.

‘I think there was maybe only one or two games for us where we won by a big margin, but the rest were by small margins, so we know how difficult it is to win a game.

‘These players have been in the Premier League longer than me, but I think even later in the season last season Arsenal were leading by eight points and Manchester City were still coming back.

A second-half brace from Mo Salah secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Southampton at St Mary’s

The Reds have built a significant lead over Man City, who were defeated 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday

“When you face Arsenal, City, Chelsea and all those other teams, you know they can all win so many games in a row.”

Speaking about Salah, Slot said: ‘We always know we can trust him when things are difficult for us, because after we were 2-1 down, I didn’t really feel like this was the moment we could score.

“It was a fantastic pass from Ryan Gravenberch, and the timing of the run and how Mo finished it was special.

“That helps you get back into the game and we needed that goal to get the last 25 minutes, because for me it was just a matter of time before we scored the third goal.”
