Army veteran named as man shot dead by police after rushing cops brandishing knives – as police defend their actions during the tragic incident

A man shot dead by police after allegedly running at officers with knives has been identified as a 52-year-old army veteran.
Police were called to a home on Bel Air Avenue in Kirwan, Townsville, at about 4:40 p.m. Friday after reports that the man, Steven Angus, had threatened to self-harm.
Police shot at Mr Angus and punched him in the chest, after he reportedly charged at them with knives.
First aid was given to Mr Angus after he was incapacitated, but he was pronounced dead shortly after Queensland paramedics arrived at the scene.

Chris Lawson, Acting Superintendent of Townsville District, said: ‘Police fired their service firearms at the man and hit the man, and as soon as he was hit first aid was administered and unfortunately a short time later after the arrival of QAS, he was declared dead’.
“This entire incident has been captured on body-worn CCTV footage so that the footage will be available to the coroner and the Ethical Standards Command during their investigation,” said Mr Lawson.
A Queensland Police spokesman said an investigation is underway.
