An Indian army officer, Agniveer Ishmeet Singh, stationed in West Bengal, was arrested by the Punjab police for running a robbery gang along with his brother. The Times of India reported on Thursday.

Singh was recruited into the Indian Army as an Agniveer in November 2022 and was posted in West Bengal. According to the report, he went on a two-month leave, never to return to duty.

For the past two months, Singh had been living in a rented room in Balongi in Mohal district of Punjab. There, he started committing thefts along with his brother Prabhpreet Singh and friend Balkaran Singh.

Gang booked taxis via apps to commit thefts

The details about Singh emerged after the gang was busted by the Mohali police, leading to their arrest. The police seized a stolen taxi, scooter and a country-made pistol and motorcycle from the gang.

Officials said the gang was busted after the police received a tip-off about them. The gang tried to steal vehicles at gunpoint by booking cabs through online mobile applications. They either used the stolen vehicles or sold them or used them for personal purposes after giving them false registration numbers.

Based on these details, Sadar Kurali police station, Mohali, booked the accused. According to the police, Singh admitted to having purchased illegal weapons from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

A case was registered against the trio after they hailed a taxi near Chapparchiri village in Mohali and stole it at gunpoint. The police are currently investigating Singh’s past.
