Police shot a 48-year-old man after he pointed a gun at officers at a rural police station.

The gunman approached officers at the Tenterfield police station in northern New South Wales on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

New England Police District officers shot the man before disarming him.

The gunman approached officers at the Tenterfield police station in northern New South Wales on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

D.Despite the efforts of responding police and paramedics, the man died at the scene.

A critical incident team of officers from the State Crime Command Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It will also investigate the discharge of a police firearm.

The investigation will be subject to independent review.
