Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen channeled Randy Johnson with a deadly throw before Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics.

Gallen was warming up for the final game of the teams three-game series when he killed a bird with an unfortunate pitch.

While warming up in the outfield, Gallen threw a curveball that hit a bird in mid-flight, apparently killing the animal.

The pitch was captured by cameras for Diamondbacks’ broadcaster Bally Sports Arizona.

The footage shows Gallen throwing the pitch before it accidentally hit the bird flying in front of the catcher.

Johnson infamously killed a bird during a 2001 spring training game. While throwing a pitch against the San Francisco Giants, a bird crossed in front of home plate and was destroyed by the baseball.

Johnson won his third Cy Young Award in the National League during that 2001 season, with a 2.32 ERA over 249.2 at bats.

Gallen’s incident occurred a day before Johnson’s birthday throwing a perfect game for Arizona against the Atlanta Braves in 2004.

Gallen has a great start to the 2023 season, posting a 2.35 ERA over 57.1 innings with 70 strikeouts to eight walks.

Despite a deadly start to the game, the Diamondbacks won the series decider.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led off the ninth inning with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a sac-fly by Jose Herrera to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for their fifth victory in six games.

Christian Walker and Corbin Carroll homered as Arizona took two of Oakland’s three in the series, despite the bullpen giving up another late lead.

Gurriel led off the ninth inning with a double off Shintaro Fujinami (1-5) for his seventh game in a row with an extra-base hit. Two walks loaded the bases before Herrera’s drive to the right by Adrian Martinez enabled Gurriel to score easily.

Ketel Marte added an RBI-single.

Jose Ruiz (1-0) threw a scoreless eighth for the win. Miguel Castro threw a perfect ninth for his third save.

The A’s have lost all eight home series this season.
