The Argentine college student who is pictured in the ‘Girl Explaining’ meme has finally revealed how the viral photo came about.

The hilarious meme shows Denise Sánchez apparently yelling into her ex-boyfriend’s ear and while her arm extended forward while attending a beachside side festival in the Buenos Aires town of Claromecó in February 2019.

The 21-year-old told DailyMail.com that her boyfriend was in fact tired because it was getting late and that she was actually singing along to a song when a young woman standing in front of them posed for a picture they unknowingly photobombed.

‘I remember she uploaded it to Twitter. She said, ‘What a letdown. They messed the picture because those two kids were in the back with that face,” Sánchez said during a phone interview Monday. ‘She was laughing because we came out in the back of the photo and she came out pretty, but she could not post it because we were in it.’

The nutrition major first saw the notorious picture being used as a meme by a nutritionist’s Instagram account that she follows.

‘There I realized how it was going viral and many pages of memes from Argentina began to upload it,’ Sánchez said.

The photo was primarily featured in memes produced by Spanish-speaking social media users, according to meme database Know Your Meme. 

The image exploded finally in United States-based social media networks as early as last week.

Ryan Thompson, a Democrat running for the South Carolina State House of Representatives, used the picture for a meme he posted on his Twitter account Sunday night to court voters ahead of the November mid-term elections.

Another person took to Twitter to use the picture as a joke about the controversial NFT phenomenon.

‘I BOUGHT A CUTE PICTURE OF A PENGUIN ON THE BLOCKCHAIN IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. IT’S CALLED AN NFT, HAVE YOU HEARD OF THEM,’ they wrote. ‘I THINK IT’S WORTHLESS NOW BUT I’M IN IT FOR THE ART.’

For now, Sánchez is taking it in stride as she’s become the center of the worldwide hilarious meme.  She even admits that she has yet to caption the picture herself for use on her own social media platforms.’

‘The truth is that I take everything very calmly and with great grace,’ she said. ‘I don’t mind being exposed because I’m pretty outgoing. So I’m not ashamed. The context they put it made me laugh a lot.’
