Argentina’s Leandro Paredes causes a huge World Cup quarter-final fight with the Netherlands after hitting Nathan Ake and smashing the ball against Dutch substitutes on the bench… before Virgil van Dijk is booked for bringing down to the midfielder

The World Cup quarterfinal between the Netherlands and Argentina has turned into chaos after a fight on the pitch.

It came after Leandro Paredes followed up a strong challenge on Nathan Ake by kicking the ball into the Dutch substitute bench, at which point players from all sides ran around him.

Then Virgil van Dijk was booked after giving Paredes a hard shove, when the referee appeared to lose control of the game.

Argentina was leading 2-1 when the incident occurred, but the Netherlands ended up taking the game into extra time in the last minute of injury time by Wout Weghorst.

There was another clash between players after regulation time, with Nicolás Otamendi receiving the 12th yellow card of the match.
