Doctor Surina Sehgal (@drsurinasehgal on TikTok), a dentist from Great Britain, has shared the top three mistakes that cause your teeth to turn yellow

Brushing your teeth too hard

The first common mistake people make is brushing too hard; it can even cause more damage than good.

Dr. Surina explained, “If you brush your teeth too hard and apply excessive pressure with your toothbrush, you can actually wear down your enamel.

‘Now your enamel layer is very white, the layer under your enamel is called dentin and it is very yellow in color.

“So if you use excessive force, over time your enamel layer will wear away and expose the yellow dentin layer underneath, making your teeth look more yellow.”

Drinking soda

She then advises viewers that carbonated drinks are another major issue that keeps your teeth from becoming sparkling white.

She said: ‘Drinking fizzy drinks is the worst for your teeth due to their acidic nature.

“Again, it causes erosion and thinning of the enamel, exposing the yellow layer of dentin underneath.”

Using a whitening toothpaste

The dentist’s third piece of advice is the most shocking and corrects a common misconception.

She told viewers: ‘Number three uses a whitening toothpaste – this one might shock you.

‘Whitening toothpastes contain very small abrasive particles, which help remove surface stains.

“But using them too often can thin your enamel, exposing the dentin.”

So while they may seem like a good short-term solution to the problem, don’t overuse them or your teeth will only become more yellow.

One viewer wondered: If all these things are wrong, how can you actually whiten your teeth?

Dr. Surina replied, ‘Avoid all these things. Maintain good oral hygiene (floss, etc.). If you want a more drastic change, try whitening with a dentist.’

Another viewer agreed: ‘Using too much whitening toothpaste is not a good idea.’

One user asked, “Is baking soda safe for brushing your teeth?” – Surina said it is the same as carbonated drinks: ‘It is abrasive and can therefore cause wear of the enamel. I would avoid’.

Someone else wondered, “Does the enamel coating repair itself?” to which the dentist replied, “Once the enamel is gone, it’s gone!” But you can strengthen it.’

Another wanted to know if using a straw with soft drinks would help.

The dentist advised: ‘Yes, straw helps limit contact with the teeth, but I would still avoid carbonated drinks as much as possible! It’s the worst thing for your teeth.’
