In Leeds, which is just 20 miles up the M62, the average hourly wage for a garage was found to be £78.

And Oldham, which is about the same distance if you travel in the other direction from Huddersfield, is also £31 more expensive than the neighboring Yorkshire town.

At the other end of the spectrum, capital—unsurprisingly—dominates the list of the most expensive hourly mechanical labor rates.

The average cost in the ‘SW’ postcode is £141, while garages in the north and north west of London (postcodes ‘N’ and ‘NW’) charge an average of £112 per hour.

All but one of the top 10 postcode areas with the most expensive hourly rates are within the M25.

Oxford is the only other area to make the top 10, with an average rate of £91 per hour.

All 279 garages contacted by Which car? were all members of the Independent Garage Association (IGA) and listed on comparison website Trust My Garage.

The average wage costs per region are based on a minimum of three garages per postcode area where the data were available.

But which car? says that in some areas, data was combined with a neighboring location to get a robust sample size – we’ve highlighted it in the list below.

Drivers in the capital are the hardest hit for average hourly wages. In fact, 9 of the 10 most expensive postcodes for garage wages lie within the M25, the What Car?

With the British in the midst of a cost of living crisis and experts predicting that a cut in oil production could soon lead to a rise in petrol and diesel prices, the consumer magazine says it’s vital for drivers to know if they’re overindulging. pay on labor costs just because of where they live.

The research results are also particularly relevant because a recent What Car? Research found that more than three-quarters of drivers (77 percent) usually don’t compare labor costs before choosing a garage, and nearly three in five (58 percent) drivers return to the same garage every time.

Which car? consumer editor Claire Evans said: ‘As the rising cost of living continues to stretch people’s budgets across the country, our research highlights the zip code lottery motorists face when it comes to garage labor rates.

‘However, you can often avoid paying too much for maintenance by looking around well in advance and comparing prices.

“The differences are so great that there are examples here where an hour’s drive can save you enough to enjoy a hotel stay and a good meal.”

Q&A: Are garages required by law to tell you their labor costs upfront?

Frank Harvey, head of member services at the Independent Garage Association, comments…

Q: Do garages legally have to tell you their labor costs before they do any work?

Frank Harvey, head of member services at the IGA

A: “The short answer is no. However, it is always wise to get an indication of the likely cost of a repair and to keep the lines of communication open with your chosen garage to avoid any nasty surprises once the work is complete.

‘Always discuss the symptoms of a malfunction with the garage and resist the urge to come up with a solution, as these symptoms can have different causes and not necessarily the most obvious.

‘It’s worth checking that the garage of your choice operates under a code of conduct, such as the Trust My Garage scheme approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, and that the garage also has an alternative dispute resolution scheme in place, in the unlikely event that in case there is a problem with a repair.

‘Don’t forget to look at the value of the service and expertise you choose; we all have experiences where the cheapest option is not necessarily the best value.”

Q: Why do labor costs sometimes increase?

A: ‘Depending on the work required, the labor elements of repairs can be significant due to the complex nature of modern motor vehicles and the need to accurately diagnose a fault before frequently replacing expensive parts.

While it is always recommended that a consumer obtains an estimate of the cost of any repairs, it is important to recognize that fixing one fault often exposes another underlying fault.

‘A coolant leak, for example, can have many possible causes, but coolant always takes the path of least resistance. In this scenario, repairing a hose that is leaking at relatively low pressure may expose another heater or water pump leak that will not become apparent until the cooling system is allowed to reach its normal operating pressure.

So while labor costs can be a large part of a repair bill, there are many factors that determine the total cost of a repair.

“This includes not only the time spent on the repair, but also diagnosing the failure, the investment in diagnostic and repair equipment, and staff wages and training, to name a few. Then there are the costs of parts, oils and lubricants, waste disposal and many other business overheads, all of which add up to the total cost of a repair.”
