Are you anonymous when you post on Facebook groups? The truth about what admins can see behind the scenes

Facebook groups are a place where many users can go anonymously for advice and recommendations on personal issues.

However, a little detail about anonymous posting shows that the poster's details are not completely secret.

When someone chooses to post anonymously in a Facebook group, he or she may not know that the group's administrators and modifiers can see their name and profile.

If administrators allow this option, Facebook group members who want to share a post can choose a setting that makes it anonymous.

The person can still comment and respond to the message, but the profile photo will be omitted and the name will be changed to “anonymous member.”

There are many reasons why someone wants to be anonymous; For example, if a woman asks for pregnancy advice when she has not yet told her friends and family, some of whom may be members of the group she is expecting.

Others may want to strictly limit interactions in the comments on their post and prevent users from messaging them through their account.

However, according to the Facebook Help Center, anonymous group members' data is still visible to admins and moderators who manage the pages.

“You can post anonymously to a group if the group admins allow anonymous posting and anonymous posting is available to you and your group,” the help page reads.

“If you post anonymously, your name and profile photo will still be visible to the group's administrators and moderators, as well as Facebook, to keep groups safe and in line with our community standards.”

One user was left confused after being banned from a group following an anonymous post.

“I thought administrators can't see your real identity now or did they just ban the poster without knowing it's me?” they asked on Reddit.

“Administrators can absolutely see the real identity behind the anonymous account,” one person replied.

'You cannot post completely anonymously on Facebook. Facebook and the group admins know who you are, so be careful what you post if you don't want anyone to know who you are,” one person explained.

“Please note that Facebook group administrators can see the real account behind the anonymous account,” another added.

“The admin can still read (a) deleted message through activity logs and admin tools… if they know how to look for it.”
