Thousands of Australians are eligible for new support payments as part of a program to provide incentives to workers.

This week, the Australian Apprenticeship Support Payment was launched for specific occupations designated as “priority occupations” by the Albanian government.

The new $5,000 payment is intended for students working in sectors where there is a high current and future demand for skilled workers.

If their profession is in ‘clean energy’, workers are eligible for more money as part of the New Energy Apprenticeship Support Payment, which can be up to $10,000.

The Australian Apprenticeship Training Support Payment of $5,000 is provided to eligible workers in four instalments over two years. Apprentices must achieve a qualification at Certificate III level or above.

The New Energy Apprentice Support Payment is spread over the duration of the apprenticeship. It is capped at $5,000 for part-time apprentices and up to $10,000 for full-time apprentices.

The sectors selected as ‘clean energy’ are also diverse and include agricultural and agri-technical technicians, auto electricians, general electricians, gas fitters, glaziers, carpenters, plumbers and welders.

“It is available wherever employers can provide students with meaningful exposure, experience and employment in clean energy,” the DEWR said.

The two payments were intended to help students work toward their career goals.

Employers may also be eligible for benefits if they hire apprentices in the listed occupations, as part of the priority hiring incentive.

Employers will receive a maximum payment of $5,000 in two installments during the first year of an apprenticeship.

According to Apprenticeship Support Australia, The new energy support payment is eligible for employees who commenced or resumed an Australian apprenticeship with a new employer on or after 1 January 2023.

‘Whether an Australian apprenticeship was restarted after 1 July 2022 with the same employer after a break of more than six months or 12 months if the start date was on or after 1 July 2022,’ the report said.
