An American expat living in Sydney, Sophia (pictured) said she heard a stereotype about Australian men being lazy when it comes to dating and wondered if it was true.

Sophia said a friend told her that actor Liam Hemsworth was “like most Australian men” after stories surfaced about him wanting to do more to stay with ex-wife Miley Cyrus.

Rumors have been circulating about the pair’s relationship after the singer released a scathing new single ‘Flowers’ which is said to be about Liam.

One rumor has it that the Australian actor allegedly dedicated the Bruno Mars song ‘When I Was Your Man’ to Miley before their split.

“My girlfriend was saying that Liam is like most Australian men, which is being lazy,” Sophia said.

“We all know he dedicated that Bruno Mars song to her saying he wished he’d bought her flowers and stuff.”

Sophia said her mother told her that she had met an Australian woman in the US who warned her that her daughter would date men from Australia.

“My mom, I guess she heard from another woman in America who was Australian and she said to my mom, ‘Oh my gosh, don’t let your daughter date an Australian guy because they’re so lazy,'” she said.

“I’m thinking about my ex and I’m like, yeah my ex was lazy and that’s why it didn’t work out and I’m wondering why, is that a cultural thing?”

The swimsuit designer, originally from Los Angeles, reflected on her past relationship with an Australian man, saying her “laziness” was the reason it didn’t work out in a video posted to TikTok.

Sophia’s clip drew more than 32,300 views and sparked a lively debate in the comments with many Australian women agreeing with her stance.

‘Because girls in Australia are 10 years old and boys are two. There is so much sale around here,” said one woman.

“Australian born here, lived between Europe and Australia and have never agreed to a second date with an Australian because… this video is true,” replied another.

“Because Australian men bully each other for being ‘gay’ or ‘spanked’ if they care about their partner,” one woman commented.

Sophia said her mother told her that she had met an Australian woman in the US who warned her that her daughter would date Australian men for being lazy.

Some noted that Australian men are “hardworking” while others said they were more “laid back” than lazy.

‘We are calm, happy, take it easy, without stress. You don’t have to be busy to enjoy life, you can always wait until tomorrow,” one man laughed.

“I think we actually prefer the term relaxed,” agreed one viewer.

I’m not sure this is true. Australians are known to be super hard workers. That is why they are recruited to work in the UK so often,” a third said, but was closed down.

Sophia’s clip drew more than 32,300 views and sparked a lively debate in the comments with many Australian women agreeing with her stance.

“She’s not talking about work ethic, she’s talking about romantic endeavor,” someone replied.

This isn’t the first time Aussie dudes have come under fire for their dating habits and a satirical clip has echoed Sophia’s sentiments by calling them “unromantic”.

Video revealing the reality of being in a relationship with an Australian man surfaced online, highlighting her obsession with all forms of sport, using confusing slang words and wearing thongs at all times.

The parody clip, which was created by the YouTube channel ‘Dating beyond borders‘, warns women from abroad to lower their expectations of grand gestures and lavish gifts, because Australian men are often ‘unromantic’.

Foreign women should prepare for long evenings watching AFL, NRL and cricket, thanks to the national love affair with the sport, while developing a sense of humor to handle the playful banter Australian men are famous for.

They must also come to terms with being second best to their partner’s friends, with Australian men renowned for the bond they share with their partners, as well as mastering slang terms to fit into their social circle.

Women from abroad should prepare for long evenings watching sports and lower their expectations for lavish gifts if they want to date an Australian man, according to a video from the YouTube parody account Dating Beyond Borders.

BEING TOTALLY UNROMANTIC

While they are known for their laid-back demeanor and friendly, fun-loving demeanor, Australian men are not typically high achievers in the romance department.

“He’s probably not the nicest gentleman out there, but he’ll probably captivate you with his nonchalant and playful spirit,” the dating experts said in the video.

Giving gifts isn’t her strong point, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t like you.

“Don’t expect much in the traditionally romantic department…it just shows it in a different way,” the clip explains.

WEARING THONGS EVERYWHERE

Overseas brides can expect their Australian partner to wear thongs for almost every occasion, from a day at the office to a night out at the pub.

“Expect Aussies to be super chill and laid back,” the video explains.

‘If I could, I’d probably wear thongs everywhere. In fact, it probably does.

Australian men are bred to display their masculinity and take things ‘manlike’, which means they are prone to guarding their emotions, keeping feelings close to their chest.

Foreign women should prepare for a lot of teasing and play fighting with their Australian hunk, which is often the way they show affection.

USE OF COLLOQUIAL TERMS

Australians are notorious for shortening words beyond recognition, using terms like ‘chockers’ instead of ‘very full’ and ‘ripper’ to describe something really great.

Foreign women must master a long list of foreign slang if they are to easily understand an Australian partner.

British tourist Elizabeth Beemer highlighted how Australians speak in a recent YouTube video, noting: “People here tend to say things very quickly and in one breath.”

‘So one, for example, is “We’ll be right.” What? And what does that mean? “We will be right” – we will be fine.

‘Or “how’s it going”: they say “how’s it going” instead of “how’s it going” or like “what’s up”. They say very quickly “how are you doing?” like in a breath, it’s so weird.

LOVING HIS PARTNERS

Australians value friendship, an admirable quality, until your boyfriend chooses “beers with the boys” over candlelit dinners with you.

The video encouraged foreign brides not to take things like this personally because “couples are very important” to Australian men.
