Apple’s next iMac might get a major upgrade, but you’ll have to wait for it
>
The rumor mill is turning again; this time it’s about reports of a new iMac model that could hit store shelves as early as late 2023.
According to Mark Gurman op Bloomberg (opens in new tab), the iMac would skip the Apple M2 chip and jump to the Apple M3 chip. In his newsletter, Gurman states, “I’ve seen nothing to indicate that a new iMac will come to the M3 chip generation, which won’t arrive until the end of this year or next year at the earliest.”
Apple has relaunched the iMac in 2021 with a brand new design and a beautiful 24-inch screen. It debuted with Apple’s then brand new silicon and got high marks from us in our iMac review due to its excellent display, great webcam and much better performance than its predecessor, so getting a new iMac model is definitely something we looked forward to as well. However, it’s a pity if it’s so late to get to the scene.
Is an M3 iMac release really possible?
This isn’t the first time this rumor has circulated about the M3 iMac, Gurman’s made the same claim in 2022, up to the year of release. And Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also helped Past And gift rumors, stating that a Mac Pro and iMac Pro would be released in 2023.
He also noted that the M3 iMac will have a “similar form factor design”, which matches what Apple did with the Mac mini and the MacBook Pro by keeping the exterior mostly the same while changing the internal design.
And while there’s no official confirmation that the next iMac will have an M3 chip or be released this year, Apple hasn’t included the iMac in its lineup of M2 products with the MacBook Air, Mac miniAnd MacBook Pro.
It seems that an M3 iMac release is at least on track, with reports from such reliable sources, but with no official confirmation, it’s important to take all of this with a hefty grain of salt.
