Apple’s M4 plans could already make the latest MacBooks obsolete

Last week we reported on famed Apple leaker Mark Gurman’s prediction that an M4 Mac refresh could be expected sometime this year. Gurman suggested that the in-house silicon is nearing the production stage and could hit the market later this year. Now Gurman has shared a roadmap of exactly when you can expect M4 refreshes of the Apple Mac series.

If you think it’s still a bit early for a brand new chip and line refresh, you’re right. The M3 chip was officially announced last October at Apple’s Scary Fast event, and we’ve literally only just seen a new one M3 MacBook Air model. If the rumor is true, the entire Mac lineup will receive a new chip generation for the first time together.

What does the timeline look like? You can see it below Gurman’s (very specific) list of predictions.

A busy year ahead for Apple

While Gurman is known as a reliable leaker, we should take this list with a grain of salt until we get official word from Apple. That said, it’s an exciting lineup, starting with brand new MacBook Pros and a refresh of the iMac equipped with the M4 chip. Hopefully the new iMac is another opportunity for Apple to finally add more colors to the iMac range.

2025 also looks littered with exciting innovations, with Gurman hinting at the introduction of the M4 Ultra chip via the Mac Pro – a surprise considering we haven’t even seen one yet. M3 Ultra yet. As we said when news of the rumored refresh broke, the move to make a very quick turnaround and have a major hardware update like this seems like a desperate attempt to stave off competition in AI-focused chips and catching up on computers.

Apple is known to ‘watch and wait’ when it comes to diving into new technology, and it looks like the company is ready to introduce its take on AI-focused consumer computing. While the company traces its ‘Neural Engine’ technology for AI workloads all the way back to the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone 8the recent AI explosion and the prevalence of neural processing units means Apple is probably keen to boost its AI technology – although it certainly runs the risk of upsetting anyone who’s recently bought an M3 Mac product…
