Apple’s Intelligence free ChatGPT upgrade may be coming sooner than expected, with a Visual Intelligence bonus

Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT integration and the iPhone 16-exclusive feature, Visual Intelligence, could become available sooner than expected as part of iOS 18.2.

Although the well-connected Mark Gurman already hinted that ChatGPT integration would be coming in iOS 18.2, we had no information about the arrival of Visual Intelligence after Apple’s promise “later this year”. This new information, found by Aaron Perris on Xshows references to “Siri with ChatGPT” and “Visual Intelligence” in Apple’s code.

ChatGPT integration gives you access to the chatbot via Siri on the latest models of the top iPhones, while Visual Intelligence takes full advantage of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro’s camera controls, letting you capture images and search for results using of AI – think of it as Apple’s Google Lens competitor.

Based on this information, both free Apple Intelligence upgrades are expected to be available as part of iOS 18.2, which will soon enter beta. This comes at an exciting time for Apple users as we get closer to October 28, iOS 18.1 and the leaked release date from Apple Intelligence.

ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool in the world, and its integration into Siri will be a major addition to the iPhone. Siri’s major Apple Intelligence upgrade won’t come until 2025, but ChatGPT integration is a nice stopgap until then. You can ask Siri to contact ChatGPT’s servers to create meal plans, summarize articles, and even write code.

The other feature here, Visual Intelligence, is the iPhone 16’s exclusive Apple Intelligence feature, which lets you use Apple AI to search for anything you can see. You can easily take a photo with Camera Control, the new side button, and Apple Intelligence will give you information about what you’re looking at. Do you want to know the opening hours of a restaurant? You got it! What about a dog’s breed? Yes, that is also possible.

While this new information doesn’t confirm Visual Intelligence and ChatGPT integration in iOS 18.2, it does make it incredibly likely. So if you’ve read our iPhone 16 review and are patiently waiting for Visual Intelligence, you might get lucky sooner rather than later.
