Apple will add a new button to the iPhone 15 and ditch a switch, rumours suggest

>

It’s been a staple in Apple’s smartphones since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, but it looks like the tech giant might ditch the mute switch on its upcoming iPhones.

Instead, a single volume and mute button may appear on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to images uploaded to TikTok by user @chenwen1987.

The designs, later posted to Twitter, show a side view of a model that appears to have just one long button for volume adjustment.

Claims also suggest that this button doesn’t move physically, just provides a sense of pressure using haptic feedback.

These “leaks” come six months before Apple is expected to announce unreleased iPhone models, as it usually does every September.

It has been suggested that iPhones could remove the mute switch following an alleged leak

Rumors about the design features of the iPhone 15

– Thinner bezel

– No physical buttons

– Thicker camera bump

– Rounder edges

– USB-C port instead of Lightning

Last year’s iPhone 14 has two volume buttons in addition to a separate mute switch for quickly turning off the sound.

Amid the iPhone 15 rumors, some have speculated that Apple could be leaning towards more software customization.

Technical Radar suspected that the mute button might have camera shutter functions if the settings were more customizable.

A Twitter user also added, “I hope the new “silent mode” haptic button will be programmable for different actions.”

Another said, “I think that mute button will be a normal click button so they can use it as a hard reset button.”

Despite this, other images show that the ‘base model’ of the iPhone 15 still included the mute switch, to aid those who prefer to use their muscle memory.

New model “leaks” follow previous rumors that suggested several design changes were coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Yesterday, tech reviewer Sonny Dickson uploaded images of what appeared to be glass panels for the unreleased phones.

These images showed that the border between the screen and the frame will soon be thinner than with previous models MacRumors.

The claim also supports other rumors from last month suggesting that te iPhone 15 Pro could be first iPhone without physical buttons and is said to have a thinner bezel, thicker camera bumps, more curved edges and haptic side buttons.

This was represented in CAD (computer-aided design) files, obtained by 9to5Macreportedly given to third-party iPhone case manufacturers prior to the device’s launch.

The website received these renderings from a factory in China that was said to be a ‘reliable suitcase manufacturer’.

The publication said: ‘The particular CAD here comes from a factory in China that is apparently the first to get these files.

“Historically, CAD files have been accurate to the final device, both in terms of dimensions and design, as having inaccurate files would be costly to enclosure designers and factories.”

Last month ZONEofTECH founder also tweeted, “Almost 100% sure iPhone 15 Pro will have LANG Unified Volume button, instead of 2 separate ones.

While making our iPhone 15 Pro Concept, we discovered that Apple uses 2 pins on each of the 2 volume buttons. The iPhone 15 Pro CAD shows only 2 pins on a longer volume rocker.”

Apple has been approached for comment.

What is the new USB-C law in Europe?

Passed by the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on Oct. 4, the new EU law forces Apple to stop selling iPhones with that proprietary power connector, known as “Lightning,” in EU countries.

Instead, USB-C connectors — currently used by Android devices — will become the EU standard, forcing Apple to change the charging port on its new products.

The law, which will come into force in 2024, only applies to EU countries.

However, to make operations simpler and cheaper, the company could completely abandon Lightning by equipping every iPhone sold worldwide with USB-C.

Either way, Apple will have to abide by the law, so iPhones sold in EU countries will have to come with USB-C instead of Lightning.
