Apple TV Plus cancels reboot of beloved ’80s fantasy film, cancels Time Bandits after one season
The Apple TV Plus Show Time Bandits has run out of time as one of the top streaming services canceled the series after one season.
The fantasy series was added to Apple TV Plus in late July and despite holding a 78% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the streamer has decided not to renew the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 cult classic for a second season.
It is no surprise that Time Bandits has received positive reviews given the amount of high-quality content the streaming giant consistently puts out – just check out our picks of the best Apple TV Plus shows . The fantasy series, created by Taikia Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris, was praised for its nostalgic nod to the original blockbuster with The guard write: “This remake of the 80s film is a confident, hilarious trek through history.” However, that wasn’t enough to Time Bandits of abolition.
According to TermThe Lisa Kudrow-led show failed to draw a large audience and failed to make it into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming charts. Now Time Bandits is just another canned series that fantasy fans are mourning, along with the cancellation of Prime Video My Lady Jane and Netflix ends The Grimm Reality from the producers of Dark, despite the fact that the recordings have been completed.
What is Time Bandits about?
Time Bandits is based on Gilliam’s iconic 1980s fantasy film that follows 11-year-old history buff Kevin (Kal-El Tuck), who discovers a time-travel portal in his closet and joins a gang of skilled thieves. Led by Penelope (Kudrow), the bandits embark on fantastical adventures while evil forces threaten their efforts. As they travel through time and space and steal valuable treasures, the gang encounters enchanting, distant worlds and rely on Kevin to explain various situations.
The series also stars Charlyne Yi, Rune Temte, Tadhg Murphy, Kiera Thompson, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva and Rachel House. Series creators Waititi and Clement also make guest appearances.
Time Bandits isn’t the only show Apple TV Plus has dropped from its library now that the curtain has fallen on the musical comedy Schmigadoon! earlier this year and it also quietly canceled a successful animated series Central Park which had a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the sad cancellation, there’s still plenty to see in the new movies and shows on Apple TV Plus that we can’t wait to watch in September 2024.
