Apple releases major AirPods Pro 2 update ahead of full iOS 18 launch

Next month, the iPhone 16 series will most likely be unveiled in a big way. Along with the devices, Apple should also release iOS 18 to the general public. And before that software update, the AirPods Pro 2 will also get an update.

As reported by 9to5MacApple is now releasing new firmware for its wireless earbuds. These firmware releases typically fix bugs and sometimes apply security patches, but this particular update also appears to pave the way for iOS 18.

During Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, we learned that when iOS 18 hits your iPhone, it will bring a number of new head gestures to AirPods Pro 2. For example, you’ll be able to accept or decline a call with a simple nod or shake of your head.

If you’re interested in the technical details, we’ve got you covered: this latest firmware upgrade is 7A5290a, replacing 7A5266c. While there are no official release notes for it, it’s likely the final touches are being put in place for iOS 18 compatibility.

New features coming soon

If you’re wondering how to update your AirPods Pro 2, there’s actually no way to do it manually. Everything happens automatically in the background whenever the earbuds are connected to an iPhone that’s connected to the internet.

As for iOS 18, it will appear as an update on your iPhone under General And Software update in Settings. You should be prompted to install the new software when it’s ready (it’s already gone through an extensive beta testing process).

Of course, there’s a lot more coming with the big 2024 update. Apple is adding a number of new home screen customization options, satellite texting and RCS support, the ability to lock and hide apps, a revamped Control Center, and more.

It appears the long-awaited Apple Intelligence features are rolling out a bit more slowly in iOS 18, but we should hear more during the official iPhone 16 event, which could be announced any day now.
