Apple could use ChatGPT to power AI features in iOS 18

With Apple set to announce iOS 18 (and much more) at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, the company is rumored to be in talks with ChatGPT developer OpenAI to help with a major AI upgrade for the iPhone .

This one comes from the usually reliable Mark Gurman Bloombergwhich says discussions between Apple and OpenAI have “renewed” and are now intensifying, according to unnamed people “familiar with the matter.”

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple was talking to Google about using the Gemini chatbot in iOS 18, so this isn’t completely out of the blue: Apple is clearly looking to partner with someone for its next major software upgrade.

What this latest report suggests is that OpenAI may have become the frontrunner in the race, meaning tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E (also developed by OpenAI) could find their way into the iOS 18 update, expected around September will be rolled out. time.

Gurman says Apple hasn’t made a decision yet: it could decide to work with Google, or with OpenAI, or with both companies. What is certain is that iOS 18 will have a strong focus on artificial intelligence – Apple has already confirmed this.

We can expect iOS 18 to also come with some sort of local, device-based AI. Apple has already shown off some new large language models (LLMs) that are small enough to be stored and executed from a smartphone.

What exactly we’ll get remains to be seen, but some form of AI text and image generation seems likely, plus a substantial upgrade to Siri. There have also been rumors about features like AI playlist generation in Apple Music.

All eyes now turn to WWDC 2024 in June, when everything Apple has been working on should be revealed – for iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS and more. Public beta versions of these updates will then follow, before the final versions are published.
