Appalling update in case of warped Vegas teen filmed laughing while mowing down and killing retired cop on his bike
A teenager who was caught on camera laughing as he fatally ran over a retired police officer on his bicycle has been declared unfit to stand trial next month.
Jesus Ayala has been transferred from prison to a maximum security psychiatric facility in Las Vegas to undergo further competency testing.
The 19-year-old was arrested in August 2023 and charged with murder, accused of deliberately running down Andreas Probst, 64, in a stolen car.
Ayala taunted police when he was arrested and allegedly told them that because he was a juvenile, “he would be out in 30 days… it’s just a slap on the wrist.”
Now, weeks after his murder trial, his mental competency is in doubt.

During an earlier hearing, the two teenage suspects allegedly dropped off Probst’s daughter and wife and giggled among themselves.

During a competency hearing on Wednesday in Nevada, Ayala’s public defender revealed that some doctors had raised concerns that the teen has brain damage.
Criminal proceedings against Ayala should be halted until it can be officially determined whether he is fit to stand trial.
Ayala and his co-defendant, Jzamir Keys, were 17 and 15 years old at the time of the crash, which prohibits the state from imposing the death penalty or life without parole if convicted.
At most, they could face a life sentence with parole after 20 years, said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.
The duo were reportedly in the middle of a crime spree at the time of Probst’s death, having previously stolen a string of cars and attacked a separate cyclist, aged 72. The man survived the collision with minor injuries.

Ayala faces a separate charge of attempted murder for a separate alleged crime, accused of stabbing a man in the face on June 27, 2023. The legal proceedings in that case will also be affected by the outcome of the competency hearing.
The victim in that case came forward and identified Ayala in a photo lineup following his arrest for the fatal attack on Probst.

Jesus Ayala, 19, and Jzamir Keys, 16, are suspected of deliberately hitting Andreas Probst, 64, as he cycled along an empty highway around 6 a.m. on August 14, 2023.
Graphic video shows a dashboard view from the front seat of a vehicle approaching Probst from behind as he drove along the curb on an otherwise traffic-free road.
Laughter and commentary are heard from inside the car before Probst, wearing a red shirt and dark shorts, was punched and thrown against the windshield.
A final image of the moving car shows the retired top cop on the ground next to the curb.
