New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez predicted that her state’s Republicans might not vote to elect Jim Jordan as speaker, given the Ohio rioter’s far-right record.
“We’ll see if Jim Jordan gets the votes,” the progressive Democrat told CNN.
“We’ll see if individuals like Mike Lawler or Marc Molinaro, who represent New Yorkers, will actually vote to appoint a man who voted to overturn the US election and who supports a national abortion ban as chairman of the House of Representatives. in line with the presidency.”
She predicted that they would be voted out of office if they supported Jordan.

Jordan is a founding member of the right-wing Freedom Caucus and is known as a conservative fighter in the House of Representatives. The last bill Jordan co-sponsored was a bill to ban abortion drugs, with a 25-year prison sentence for violations.

Questions have also been raised about Jordan’s vote to overturn the 2020 election results.
According to the January 6 select committee, Jordan was a “key player” in Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, working with White House staffers and allies such as Rudy Giuliani to strategize on how the election results could be overturned in Joe Biden’s favor.

New York experienced a red wave in 2022, with Republicans gaining five seats in the liberal stronghold.
Freshman Rep. Mike Lawler has said he is voting for Kevin McCarthy. New representatives Marc Molinaro and George Santos will represent Jordan. Others, like Reps. Anthony D’Esposito and Brandon Williams, have not yet said how they will vote.
Jordan’s bid for speaker will be tested at noon Tuesday during the floor vote since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster two weeks ago.
Congress has been paralyzed for two weeks, unable to conduct business, and it will take another month for the government to run out of money again.
Jordan has emerged as the favorite after Rep. Steve Scalise abruptly dropped out last Thursday, but at least six members of his party have vowed to reject his bid anyway. Even more have not yet revealed how they will vote.
