Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Republican Rep. Paul Gosar were caught chatting on the House camera Tuesday, 14 months after the Arizona Republican was censured for sharing an anime video of him killing her.

The left-wing New Yorker and right-wing Arizonan were sitting next to each other and found themselves caught up in an animated conversation for several minutes amid Tuesday afternoon drama over who would become the next House speaker.

Talking Points report reported that Gosar, one of the Republican mavericks trying to topple Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s presidential bid, wanted to hear from AOC if Democrats would leave the room in an effort to help the California Republican leader.

To be elected speaker, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes of the members present. If all members vote, the magic number is 218.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Republican Rep. Paul Gosar were caught chatting on the House camera Tuesday, 14 months after the Arizona Republican was censured for sharing an anime video of him killing her.

After the picture of the two chatting began to go viral, Gosar tweeted a caption: “Then I said: ‘The internal combustion engine was actually an engineering miracle that people take for granted today…” wrote.

Rep. Paul Gosar was censored in November 2021 for sharing an anime video showing the Arizona Republican killing AOC, one of the most liberal members of Congress.

However, members can leave or vote ‘present’ instead of for a particular candidate, lowering the threshold McCarthy would need to ascend to office.

‘Gosar heard from McCarthy that McCarthy could make the Democrats go [and] therefore reducing the number of votes needed,’ a source told TPM. ‘She said, no, she didn’t go [true].’

After the image of Gosar and Ocasio-Cortez began to go viral, Gosar tweeted a caption: “Then I said, ‘The internal combustion engine was actually an engineering miracle that people take for granted today… “, wrote.

The Intercept reported Tuesday that Rep. Matt Gaetz, another rogue Republican, had made a similar inquiry to AOC.

“McCarthy was suggesting that he could get the Democrats to walk away to lower the threshold,” Ocasio-Cortez told the publication. “And I checked the facts and I said absolutely no.”

Through the drama of Tuesday afternoon’s speech, Democrats remained a solid block in support of New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the agreed Democratic replacement for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

But all afternoon, a band of Republican rebels have cast votes for other candidates, primarily Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who under McCarthy was destined to become chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee.

AOC told The Intercept that he checked with Democratic Party leaders and found there were no plans for a group of Democrats to vote ‘present’ to help McCarthy.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who supports McCarthy, admonished the fraternization across the aisle.

First Gaetz and Good, now Gosar. They never talk to her Greene tweeted Tuesday.

Earlier, Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Pete Aguilar criticized McCarthy during his first nomination speech of the day for Jeffries.

It does not traffic in extremism. He does not humiliate himself or make excuses before a former president accused twice, ”said Aguilar. “He does not bend the knee to anyone who seeks to undermine our democracy.”

McCarthy has stayed mostly in the MAGA crowd, condemning former President Donald Trump in the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill, but cuddling with him again in the months since.

But that still hasn’t helped him with some of MAGA’s most loyalists, including Gaetz, Gosar and manager Lauren Boebert.

At around 5:30 pm Tuesday, the House adjourned for the day, with the speech issue unresolved.
