AOC says Joe Biden has not sought help with his 2024 campaign, as the president’s campaign plans a fundraiser with Barack Obama and Bill Clinton

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says President Joe Biden hasn’t contacted her about helping with his 2024 reelection
  • She says her “role” in 2024 is to increase the power of the progressive movement
  • Comes as Biden plans a fundraiser with Obama and Clinton in the spring

President Joe Biden has not reached out to progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in his bid for a second term in the White House, the New York lawmaker said.

But the president is calling on former Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to hold a fundraiser to boost enthusiasm for his re-election campaign, a new report shows.

AOC told Meet the Press host Kristen Welker that she sees her role in the 2024 presidential race as “increasing the power” of the progressive movement, but admitted she has not been directly tapped by the Biden camp.

Meanwhile, Biden’s team is leaning toward establishment Democrats to try to energize a voter base that otherwise seems apathetic toward his reelection, with majorities in the polls saying they don’t want to see a rematch between him and former President Donald Trump.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says President Joe Biden hasn’t contacted her about helping with his 2024 re-election. She says, ‘I see my role in general’ with 2024′ as really trying to expand power of the progressive movement

Four people who are familiar with planning told NBC News that the first fundraiser of its kind is in the works to feature Biden, Clinton and Obama side by side in the spring. No date has been set, but schedules are now being coordinated for a fundraiser in March or April.

It underlines the importance of Biden’s allies in helping him cross the finish line in November in an election seen as having the highest stakes for the future of American democracy.

“You know, you’ve said in the past that it’s not enough for Democrats to just talk about what they’re against. You want the president to talk about what he’s running for,” Welker told Rep. Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday morning. “Do you think President Biden is doing a good enough job at this point in explaining to voters why they should vote for him and not just against former President Trump?”

“I think we can certainly do more to further our vision. And I believe we have a strong vision that we can build on,” she responded, asserting that Biden should focus on issues like more affordable health care and lowering college tuition, in addition to student loan forgiveness.

“But I do believe that advancing that positive vision will be very, very important, and that between now and November, through our government decisions, our government decisions, we will really explain and demonstrate when we have that power in the White House . , what we want to do with it.’

“Has the Biden campaign contacted you and said, ‘We want you to help re-elect President Biden’? How do you see your role and the role of progressives in this re-election effort?” Welker posed.

“I see my role in general as trying to expand the power of movements,” she responded, adding, “We have been in contact with the Biden administration throughout my term and also during his term.”

“I know he’s been in touch, you know, with a lot of members of Congress. But you know, I think the most important thing is that (and in terms of my role) I think my role is to stay true to the popular movements in this country.”

Biden has focused more on campaigning for his re-election in the new year, visiting states including North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia to spread his message. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris was deployed west, where she praised the administration’s steps to strengthen small businesses during a turnaround in Nevada.

Donald Trump is still embroiled in a primary contest with former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. But with Trump now far in the lead, it looks like 2024 will be a rematch between him and Biden — even if that’s the last thing voters say they want.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week found that 67 percent of primary voters “are tired of seeing the same candidates in the presidential elections and want someone new.”

The same poll showed Trump with a 6 percentage point lead over Biden.
