Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez praised the United Kingdom’s political system for allowing the impeachment of Prime Minister Liz Truss, while at the same time taking a veiled chance at the partisan politics of her fellow Democrats.

In a Saturday night post on Instagram, the New York Democrat complained that her homeland’s political system gave people “limited political options” compared to the UK.

It is not clear what political freedoms in the UK she was looking at when she pitted the two systems against each other. Truss’s brief, tumultuous tenure came and went without a single everyday Briton casting a vote.

The Conservative British leader announced outside 10 Downing Street on Thursday that she would be stepping down after just 44 days on the job.

Her six weeks were marked by economic turmoil and insurrection between the parties, fueled by a controversial tax cut plan that sent the value of the British pound into a tailspin.

But Ocasio-Cortez still championed it as a positive alternative to the US system, because of the latter’s rules that allow Donald Trump to serve a full term as president.

In a Q&A on her Instagram story, Ocasio-Cortez was asked by a British supporter how the political unrest in England is seen on the outside – adding that it was a source of embarrassment to them.

“I can’t speak for the world, but frankly I respect the UK for having a political system that is responsive and independent enough to make quick corrections in situations like this,” the legislator replied.

“I respect that your parliamentary system seems to offer a greater degree of independence and accountability than the US, where our two-party duopoly forces people to have much more limited political options.”

In an apparent jab at Congressional leadership, she added: “Our system makes it extremely difficult to hold one’s own party leadership accountable without being accused of (and in some cases even running the risk of) ‘putting the other side’. help’, which only further protects (or erodes) the status quo.’

“Think about it: we had Trump for four years! No return! Imagine being stuck like that,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Or be a rich country without guaranteed health care. THAT is embarrassing now.’

But far from giving the public a chance to elect a new leader, the British Conservative Party appears to be countering left-wing Labor calls for new general elections – putting the Tories at risk of losing government power.

Currently, the next elections are in January 2025.

As it stands, Conservative MPs will vote among themselves for a new leader next week. One of the frontrunners is former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Truss stood outside the Prime Minister’s residence at No. 10 Downing on Thursday, acknowledging the tumultuous financial situation the world found itself in during her brief leadership stint.

‘I took office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses worried about how to pay their bills. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our entire continent. And our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth,” Truss said.

“We’ve set a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy that would benefit from the freedoms of Brexit.”

She added: “However, I recognize that given the situation, I cannot fulfill the mandate for which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

“I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to inform him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

US President Joe Biden, who previously called Truss’ tax plan a “mistake,” praised the embattled politician for her “partnership” in leading the West’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in a statement in response to her dismissal.

He reaffirmed his gratitude for her cooperation with Ukraine when he was asked by reporters on Thursday morning whether Truss was “doing the right thing.”

“Well, that’s up to her to decide, but look, she was a good partner in Russia and Ukraine,” Biden told reporters en route to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “The British are going to solve their problems, but she was a good partner.”
