AOC is mocked for debuting bizarre new accent at Democrat National Convention
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s speech at the Democratic National Convention left some baffled, with some thinking she was trying out a bizarre new accent.
The Squad Democrat, who has been accused of public vote manipulation in the past, delivered a roughly seven-minute speech in Chicago on Monday night to much applause.
At one point, however, she appeared to use a different voice when she compared Donald Trump to Kamala Harris.
“I’m sick of hearing a union buster think of herself more as a patriot than the woman who fights every day to pull working people out from under the boots of greed that is trampling on our way of life.”
The phrase “on our way of life” resonated with many, with AOC using a very different accent and rhythm to deliver the phrase.
She appeared to expand on the word “life,” prompting some conservatives to ask, as one put it, “What accent is AOC using here?”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s speech at the Democratic National Convention surprised some who thought she was trying out a new accent
Another wrote: ‘Besides AOC discovering a new accent, it’s hilarious to hear her claim that Donald Trump only fights for ‘the rich and big business.’ The Democratic Party is literally the party of wealthy elites, Hollywood stars, professional athletes, and woke megacorporations.’
‘AOC speech was cringe. The fake accent was way too much for me. Backstabbing. I called it. DNC is cringe as all get out,’ added another.
Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens in Congress, has been accused of putting on an accent in the past.
In 2023, she faced criticism after video footage surfaced showing her speaking with an accent before Al Sharpton’s civil rights organization.
The Democratic lawmaker slipped into a Southern drawl as she told the crowd, “I’m proud to be a bartender. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who grew up in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, is accused of appeasing the crowd at the 2019 National Action Network conference.
In a new viral video calling AOC “a total fraud,” the clip is juxtaposed with more recent footage of her criticizing Donald Trump, sans her obvious accent.
The allegations date back to Ocasio-Cortez’s early years in Congress, when she had to defend herself against the same video clip in 2019.
Many conservatives questioned the voice Ocasio-Cortez used in her speech on social media
“People who talk about my voice can just walk away,” she wrote on Twitter. “Any child who grew up in a language culture that was different and had to navigate the classroom environment at school/work knows what’s going on. My Spanish is the same.”
“As much as the right wing tries to distort and distract, I am from the Bronx. I act and talk like one, *especially* when I am excited and especially when I am at home. It is so painful to see every aspect of my life being used against me, yet somehow being labeled as false,” she continued.
Ocasio-Cortez grew up in the Bronx until she was five, when her family bought a house in Yorktown Heights in upstate Westchester County. She returned to the Bronx after graduating from Boston University in 2011.
When she surprisingly entered Congress, DailyMail.com reported that Ocasio-Cortez had spent much of her childhood in posh Westchester County, a stark contrast to a biography of her ill-fated campaign in which she touts her Bronx roots.
After living in the Parkchester apartment until she was five, her family moved to the suburban home for the better schools. They sold the house when her father tragically died of cancer in 2008, but they retained ownership of the Bronx apartment.
Her speech nearly blew up the partisan United Center when Ocasio-Cortez said she would be “happy” to be a bartender after calling Donald Trump a “two-for-one union buster” who would betray the country for “one dollar.”
“Republicans have attacked me, saying I should go back behind the bar,” the New York Democrat said during her primetime speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
“I can tell you that I’m happy every day of the week because there’s nothing wrong with working for a living,” she said as the crowd erupted in cheers.
“Donald Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets and greasing the hands of his Wall Street buddies,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.
The adoring crowd chanted “AOC” during her primetime speech on the first day of the DNC, just a few speakers before President Biden took the stage.
“I’m sick of hearing a union man like Buster think of himself more as a patriot than as the woman who fights every day to help working people get ahead.”
Her speech was clearly establishment-approved and a stark departure from her usual progressive, burn-it-all style.
Instead, she appeared to embrace the platform of the Democratic Party and its leaders, drawing the attention of some critics on social media.
At this convention, Ocasio-Cortez was given a prime-time, first-night speaking slot. Last time in 2020, she was given just 90 seconds to give a virtual speech to symbolically endorse Sanders for the nomination.
“In no other country would Joe Biden and I be in the same party,” Ocasio-Cortez said. said in 2020.
Democrats are meeting to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to lead the top of their ticket.
