Anya Taylor-Joy reveals that an epic 15-minute action scene in her new film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga took a staggering 78 DAYS to film
Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed that a 15-minute action scene in her new movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga took a whopping 76 days to film.
The 28-year-old actress, who takes over the role of the younger Furiosa in the upcoming film set fifteen to twenty years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, spoke about the “wild” filming process for her latest film.
Anya leads the cast in the latest Mad Max film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and features an epic scene between the star and her younger self – played by Alyla Browne.
Anya appeared on The One Show on Thursday with co-star Chris Hemsworth, 40, and gave hosts Roman Kemp and Lauren Laverne some insight into what goes into filming such a long scene.
“We filmed it for 78 days, 78 days!” Anya said. ‘Yes. It’s called Stowaway. It was 100 percent the mountain we were all trying to climb.”

Anya went on to say that the scene had its own scene due to how huge a task it was, also known as a second unit, and was directed by Guy Norton – who was a stuntman in the first Mad Max.
She continued, “It was wild! It was so much fun but also very interesting because it all took place on the war rig, so I had it mapped out really well in my head, like “Okay, I have a month and a half under the oil rig, a month on the side”.
‘When I finally reached the cabin next to Tom Burke, he handed me a sandwich and said, “Good job, you made it” and I said, “Thanks.”
Roman asked Anya – whose character has little dialogue and reveals much of her story through her eyes – how she kept up the intensity during such a long shoot.
She replied: ‘The Mad Max world encourages people who want to have an experience like this and because we all come to work as fans too, it gives you this extra energy and excitement because you just want to do the best that you can through the franchise .’
When asked if she was concerned about being a main character with few lines, Anya said: “You know what’s crazy, I never worried about the lack of dialogue, like you said, it made a lot of sense for the character, so I was like, ‘Yeah yeah, I’ve got this’. But George also had a very strict idea of how he wanted me to hold my face for a lot of the movie, so when you say I only hold my eyes had, it was actually exactly this.
‘I think there is an element that makes the situation worse because I’m sure she wants to talk about what’s happening in her life but she’s just surviving. So yeah, I think it gave that fire.”
Main character Chris – who plays Doctor Dementus, the warlord of the Bike Horde who kidnapped the young Furiosa – nodded in agreement.
The film is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, again directed by creator George Miller, and is an origin story for Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the previous film.
While Chris plays the warlord leader, Dementus, who he described as ‘a very violent, insane, brutal person born from the Wasteland’ (pictured)
“There was a beautiful intensity,” he said. ‘A kind of volcanic eruption about to happen, a limited presence and power that was waiting and simmering and that ultimately leads to the climax at the end of the film where we get to see quite a dynamic whole. [stuff].’
The duo appeared on the BBC show as they flew from the south of France to Britain, where they attended the Furiosa premiere in Cannes.
Anya looked every bit the leading lady as she walked the red carpet in a stunning strapless Dior gown with a corset-style top and Tiffany diamond jewelry.
She showed off her fashion credentials in the pale gold number that was adorned with crystals and paired with a statement silver chain.
Anya wore her blonde locks in a sleek bob and wore simple stud earrings, while opting for a pop of red lip for a pop of color.
Her leading man Chris Hemsworth soon arrived in a sleek white suit and was joined by his glamorous wife Elsa Pataky, 47, who wore a chic black dress.
For Anya, Furiosa in Cannes is a full circle moment. The first time she came to the festival was to receive a Chopard Trophy as an emerging actor in 2017. This was presented by the original Furiosa, Charlize Theron, star of Fury Road.
