Looking through the objects in a small shop in Markyate, Hertfordshire, the expert noticed signs that had an “East London theme”.

“These are outside a London bus, these would have sat at the front inside a frame telling you where the bus was going,” Mark explained.

‘Inside there would be a small knob where the driver would turn to change the destination.

‘So what do we have? Romford, Romford Station, we’ve got Cambridge Heath, we’ve got a bit of an East London theme.

‘I can see this would be interesting to a lot of people and I love this East End vibe.

“Imagine cutting them up and then framing them all and displaying them on a wall and they’re not that common either.”

The signs only cost Mark £20 each, happy with his find he took them to the W&H Peacock Auction Centre, to see how they were fair.

Auctioneer Lindsay Taylor began: ‘We have tons of commission bids. I’m going to have to start at £140.’
