Anthony Gordon says he doesn’t understand the point of VAR after it failed to intervene and award Newcastle a penalty at Old Trafford.
The winger’s sock was left torn after Sofyan Amrabat’s challenge in the penalty area in the first half, but there was no VAR check.
On the day it was announced that Premier League clubs will vote on whether to use VAR, Gordon was furious with the players at Stockley Park after his side’s 3-2 defeat.
“It’s a clear, obvious and obvious mistake, I don’t know how you can get it wrong,” he told Sky Sports.
‘So either get rid of it or get better. It’s very simple.
Anthony Gordon thought he should have been awarded a penalty due to a foul by Sofyan Amrabat
Gordon couldn’t believe he wasn’t awarded a penalty that could have given Newcastle the chance to take a 1-0 lead
Amrabat’s tackle on Gordon’s Achilles tendon ripped a hole in the Newcastle player’s sock
‘I don’t mind if the referee gets it wrong on the pitch because things move very quickly.
‘But I don’t understand what the point of VAR is, because it is there to correct mistakes. He goes along my Achilles tendon and pushes me in the back. I honestly don’t see the point in it.’
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was more disappointed with his team’s defence.
“We had chances and I felt like we could score at any moment,” he said.
‘But we lost the match because of the way we defended their goals. We really need to hang our heads. I thought we performed well, just not at the key moments.’
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag says Manchester United want to keep Bruno Fernandes at the club, despite the captain giving a post-match interview in which he said: ‘I don’t want to be a player the club doesn’t want. If for some reason they don’t want me, I’ll go.’
Premier League clubs will vote next month on whether to scrap VAR next season
It comes after a proposal was tabled by Wolves following a number of high-profile mistakes this season
But Ten Hag said: ‘Absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno. All I know about him is that he loves Manchester United, the fans and playing for Manchester United.
‘He always does the best of himself and is an example, even with injuries. It’s not easy when so many players around him are injured and he has to carry the team.
‘It remains at a good level and grows to a fantastic level, especially in the spring.’
