Anthony Gordon sends warning to Man United as Newcastle look to pile the misery on Ruben Amorim with ‘relentless’ display at Old Trafford
- Manchester United are fourteenth in the Premier League after a 2-0 defeat to Wolves
- Newcastle have now found their feet and won their last four games in a row
- LISTEN NOW: It all starts! New formation, some new faces, but the optimism is gone at Old Trafford
Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has warned Manchester United that the in-form Magpies will pile on the misery when they head to Old Trafford on Monday.
United suffered a 2-0 defeat to struggling Wolves on Boxing Day and are 14th in the Premier League, 11 points behind the top four and eight above the drop zone.
Goals from Matheus Cunha, who scored directly from a corner in a repeat of Son Heung-min’s strike for Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and Hwang Hee-chan inflicted a fifth defeat on new boss Ruben Amorim in just his 10th game in charge the leadership.
Eddie Howe’s side have now won their last four games in a row to climb to fifth place, a marked turnaround from their poor form just weeks ago.
And Gordon believes Newcastle have now gone from ‘almost men’ to contenders for the Champions League places, with the Red Devils next in their sights.
After the 3-0 win against Aston Villa, Gordon said: ‘What has changed? We’re running out of men, we’ve won! It’s just a change in mentality.
Anthony Gordon has warned Manchester United that Newcastle will want to pile on the misery
United’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day was Ruben Amorim’s fifth defeat in his first ten games
United are fourteenth in the Premier League and just eight points above the relegation zone
‘We got to the point where we had drawn and should have won. We lost really badly to Brentford and then the question was how long we would continue to miss these opportunities to move up. Everything is so tight.
‘It was an impressive win over Villa. When you see that focus, like against Villa, we win games. We put teams behind and if we look back at our Champions League season, we can score goals like that at any time.
“If we score an early goal, teams have to come out and pressure us and then we can do our job. The response was incredible. We must continue.
‘On to the next match. Big games. We must be ruthless. Now it’s about being able to take performances home with you. We don’t want any inconsistency.
‘We can do whatever we want.
‘We started quite slowly and missed opportunities. We will collect the form at the right time. Christmas is the time when the competition starts to take shape.
‘We are in good shape at the right time.’
With United falling off the table, a beleaguered Amorim at Molineux admitted he is not safe from defeat despite only taking charge last month.
Gordon challenged Newcastle to then deliver a ‘ruthless’ performance at Old Trafford
Eddie Howe has produced a remarkable change in form and his side now sit in fifth place
“I know the business I’m in,” Amorim said. ‘The manager of Manchester United can never feel comfortable in any case.
‘I know that if we don’t win, regardless of whether they pay the buyout or not, I know that every manager is in danger. I like that because that’s the job, so I understand the question.
“You can say I’ve been here for a month and had four training (sessions), but we’re not winning. That is the reality and I feel quite comfortable with that.’
