Anthony Albanese’s message for Joe Biden who has announced he will not seek re-election as US president
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked Joe Biden for his leadership and continued commitment after the US president withdrew his candidacy for re-election.
The 81-year-old Democrat posted a message on X saying he would remain president and commander in chief until the end of his term in January 2025.
He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his party candidate in the upcoming November elections.
On Monday morning, Mr Albanese posted a message on X thanking Biden and sharing the president’s tweet.
“Thank you for your leadership and continued commitment, President Biden,” Albanese wrote.
‘The Australia-US alliance is stronger than ever, thanks to our shared commitment to democratic values, international security, economic prosperity and climate action for this and future generations.’
Biden wrote that it was the greatest honor of his life to serve as US president.
“And while it was my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my president for the remainder of my term.”
Biden’s announcement follows public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party officials to withdraw from the race after his poor performance during a televised June 27 debate against his 78-year-old Republican rival Donald Trump.
