Prime Minister Anthony Albanese sent the AFL Grand Final breakfast crowd into hysterics after he roasted AFL boss Gil McLachlan for his poor pronunciation of Italian surnames, which blew up star Christian Petracca at the Brownlow Medal Awards.

Albanians tore McLachlan to shreds during the traditional big dance breakfast hosted by the North Melbourne Kangaroos.

On his introduction, 59-year-old CEO Gil McLachlan congratulated his time with the AFL, doing some brutal digging for his Brownlow medal stuff.

“I’m glad you didn’t have to take the credit for introducing me today,” Albanian said.

“I understand from Christian Petracca that you have some problems with Italian surnames.”

Board members and leader of the opposition Peter Dutton burst out laughing, where McLachlan was visibly taken aback by the jab.

But Albanian’s antics didn’t end there.

The Rabbitohs supporter referred to Tony Abbott when talking about the AFL’s famous Yarra parade, where big finals players drift down the river as fans flock to the banks.

“I would say to Gil, after watching the parade on the Yarra yesterday, to quote a former prime minister, ‘we have to stop the boats.'”

The crowd erupted again, before Albanian completed the formalities of his speech.

McLachlan was blasted for his statement from star Demons midfielder Christian Petracca as he announced points for the Brownlow Medal.

The 26-year-old who finished sixth with 24 votes said ‘it’s Petracca, for God’s sake’ just after the boss read his name.

McLachlan had repeatedly pronounced his last name “Pet-rack-a” while the correct pronunciation is “Pet-rah-ka.”

The Prime Minister has already supported the AFL in their future ventures during his short tenure in the top office, and supported their effort to expand into Tasmania.

Over the past two decades, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and St Kilda have all played home games on the Apple Isle – the Saints’ Agreement ended in 2006 – and Tasmania has long been a contender to become the home of the next AFL team.

In 2019, Albanian took to the field for a charity event, where he was decked out in local Western Walers kit.
