Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s love of rabbits meshed nicely with the 2023 Lunar New Year celebrations after he was seen obsessively flashing his red animal-embellished tie to anyone who would listen.

Albanese attended a Lunar New Year celebration at Box Hill in south-east Melbourne on Sunday, where he was repeatedly caught on camera flashing the red tie emblazoned with the furry creatures to other attendees.

The Chinese New Year celebrations officially started on January 22 and will end on February 1.

It is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture, marking the end of winter and the beginning of the new year, which is based on the Chinese lunisolar calendar.

According to the Chinese zodiac, a traditional classification system based on the lunar calendar, each year in a 12-year rotation cycle is assigned an animal. 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit.

Australian TikToker Victor Gray posted the joyous video of the prime minister wandering around Box Hill festivities, even getting a question before Mr Albanese was led to his car.

The suburb is situated in the Whitehorse local government area and has a large Chinese population, with 7.3 percent of residents being Chinese-born.

“Look how happy Anthony Albanese is with his tie,” Gray said in the video.

‘He just wants to show it to everyone.’

In the TikTok clip, Albanese looked pleased as he showed the tie to a woman sitting next to him, who was fanning herself in the summer heat.

She then turned away to show another woman the tie, before inviting the man next to her to give his approval, which he did with an eager thumbs up.

In the video, Gray then asks the PM if the tie was intentional or “he was just supporting the Rabbitohs”.

Albanese responds with an indignant ‘No!’ and said it was a ‘conscious’ effort to fit in with local celebrations.

Red with bunnies. Perfect,’ she said, as she walked past the camera smiling and holding a stuffed rabbit.

Mr. Albanese’s love for rabbits is not new.

The Premier is one of the most passionate sponsors of the NRL team South Sydney Rabbitohs.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he was regularly seen wearing a Rabbitohs face mask and frequently attends NRL games in support of his beloved team, dressed in the team’s colours, red and green.

Gray said at the end of the clip that the prime minister had given off “some first-class content-dad vibes”.

“Honestly, I don’t think he was that happy when he won the election,” he said.

Grey’s supporters praised the prime minister for his “wholesome” display of enthusiasm.

‘I legitimately LOVE seeing people so happy with things and not being afraid to show it. We need more of this in the world,” read one comment.

Lunar New Year, known in China as nongli xinnian, meaning ‘Farmer’s Calendar New Year’ or ‘Farmer’s Calendar New Year’, is believed to have originated in ancient China around 3,500 years ago.

The Year of the Rabbit is the fourth year of the cycle, following the Year of the Tiger and preceding the Year of the Dragon.
