Anthony Albanese under fire over key claim about released asylum seeker accused of bashing a pensioner in her home

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has criticized Anthony Albanese over a major claim about a recently released asylum seeker accused of preying on a grandmother.

Ms Ley spoke about the Prime Minister on Sky News on Sunday as the fallout from the alleged home invasion in Perth on April 16 continues.

Ninette Simons, 73, and her husband Phillip, 76, were allegedly targeted by a trio including 43-year-old Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan – one of 154 detainees released by the Supreme Court.

The outrage arose after it became known that the detainee’s ankle monitor had been removed prior to the alleged burglary.

The Prime Minister said the decision was ultimately made by the Community Protection Board.

Then revelations emerged. Jamshidi Doukoshkan had been released on bail for previous offenses and questions were asked about why the Commonwealth did not oppose it.

The Albanian government demanded that the Protection Board and the Federal Director of Public Prosecutions be responsible for the case.

Ms Ley has taken issue with the claim accusing Mr Albanese of trying to avoid taking ownership of the huge hassle.

She said she was ‘shocked, horrified and disgusted’ by the whole ordeal.

“A woman about 70 years old, a cancer patient in Western Australia, (has) her face on the front of the WA newspaper,” she said.

β€œThe terror she must have experienced and we have a government handing it all over to a community protection advisory board and even the Prime Minister suggesting he is at arm’s length.”

She said Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has remained absent during the controversy, despite calls for him and Home Secretary Clare O’Neil to be sacked.

β€œI think (Mr Giles) is letting that get in the way of an actual, decent, human approach when you have the regulators and legislative tools to do something,” Ms Ley said.

Ms Simons similarly demanded to know on Thursday why the community protection board ordered Jamshidi Doukoshkan’s ankle monitor removed weeks before she was allegedly attacked.

“I don’t understand how he ended up in our living room?” Mrs Simons asked Mr Giles.

‘I don’t feel so safe here anymore, unfortunately not, I do my best to live here.’

Mr Albanese said the next day that the board had “made a wrong decision… but they make the decisions”.

The Prime Minister said he would not comment on “operational matters” if questioned about the ankle monitoring issue.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Mr Albanese for comment.
