Joe Biden appeared to suggest in a new interview with a black radio station that he was “proud” to be “the first Black woman to serve with a Black president.”
The 81-year-old president, prone to gaffes, stumbled over his words during an interview with WURD in Philadelphia on Thursday, in which he apparently mingled with his Vice President Kamala Harris.
“By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, the first black woman… to serve with a black president. Proud to be involved with the first black woman on the Supreme Court. There’s so much we can do, because look… we’re the United States of America.”
Biden appeared to emphasize his nomination of Kamala Harris as the first black female vice president of the United States.
Confusingly, he himself had previously served as vice president, which is probably what he meant by “serving under a black president.”
The Supreme Court referral concerns Ketanji Brown-Jackson, the first Black female justice, who was appointed by Biden in 2022.

The president spoke to black radio hosts in Milwaukee and Philadelphia for his first post-debate interviews since the tragedy struck a week ago.
Biden admitted he had a “bad debate” last week but said it was outweighed by what he had accomplished in office.
“I had a bad debate. But 90 minutes on stage doesn’t erase what I’ve done for three and a half years,” he told WURD’s Andrea Lawful-Sanders.
Biden repeated the argument he’s been making ever since his poor debate performance: One bad night can’t erase his record as president.
His interview with WURD lasted just under 15 minutes. After one question in the debate, Lawful-Sanders asked about Biden’s record with black Americans.
Biden will sit down with ABC News in Wisconsin on Friday.
The president will host Fourth of July festivities at the White House on Thursday night, with his future and that of his party hanging in the balance as pressure to resign grows after last week’s debate.

This came after the first elected Democrats came forward to urge Biden to step down, with the party convention in Chicago just weeks away.
Amid anger over White House messaging since Biden stumbled in his debate with Donald Trump in Atlanta, the president reassured governors in a private meeting about his health and political viability — even telling them about a recent checkup that showed he was in good health.
That came shortly after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dodged direct questions during a heated press conference about whether Biden had been evaluated since Thursday’s debate.
Biden will host veterans’ families, caregivers and survivors at an event that will put him back on the public stage before a pivotal interview with ABC airs Friday. Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to attend.
