Animal cruelty rescuer at Snowy Mountains Smart Animal Sanctuary finds dumped roosters sealed in bag

Horrifying moment when animal rescue worker opens two sealed plastic bags dumped on the roadside – and the cruel discovery she found inside

  • The birds were found in plastic bags with tie straps
  • Animal shelter founder labeled the act ‘disgusting’

This is the heartbreaking moment when an animal rescuer discovered two roosters ‘disgracefully’ dumped in sealed plastic bags in her driveway.

Snowy Mountains resident and founder of Smart Animal Sanctuary in NSW Lorene Cross discovered the two bags at the front of the shelter’s driveway.

Mrs Cross initially thought the two sacks had fallen off a bin lorry, but soon discovered two roosters in the sealed sacks.

The former New Zealand vet nurse shared a video of the discovery on TikTok on Wednesday with the caption, “Not the best way to start our morning. Be kind to animals.’

The video shows Ms Cross carrying the plastic bags away from the road before cutting the binding straps.

“Oh my god, that’s brutal,” says Mrs Cross.

Another woman is heard wondering how long the roosters had been there before they were discovered, to which Mrs Cross replied ‘Only God knows’.

After opening the two bags, Mrs. Cross was relieved to find the two white roosters alive.

The roosters are heard clucking as they walk across the grass near the shelter’s fence, with a woman claiming the animals are saying “thank you” for being released.

Ms Cross called the dumping of animals in plastic bags a “disgusting and disgraceful” act.

“To put them in a bag and just dump them in the driveway with no food…” I think it’s disgusting and disgraceful,” Ms Cross told Yahoo News.

“I have four of my own dogs that run free here and I know two of them would have loved a little KFC on the run in principle. That’s just cruelty.’

Ms Cross said she has previously found abandoned roosters at the sanctuary, with the dead body of a rooster found in a bush.

“People don’t seem to know what to do with roosters. They like to keep the girls [hens] luckily and then they breed and all of a sudden they have 10 roosters,” Ms Cross said.

She added that animal dumping is “common” and a “big problem” after finding six puppies in the bush a few weeks ago and nine kittens having to have their collars removed.

Ms. Cross recommends anyone considering rehoming their pet or animal to call a shelter first.

SMART Animal Sanctuary & Rehoming Center was established in 2003 and is home to 52 dogs, 32 cats and several farm animals.

To the relief of Mrs Cross, two roosters were found alive and well after cutting the ties that sealed the tops of the plastic bags

The video has been viewed more than 1.2 million times and received more than 2,800 comments, with many TikTok users thanking Ms. Cross for saving the roosters.

‘You’re kidding, how cruel can people be!!! Thanks for saving their poor souls,” one person wrote.

‘This is horrible. those poor animals. There must be a permit to keep animals. You are all amazing for the work you do,” a second person wrote.

So cruel omg can’t stop crying. Why people do this. Thank goodness for people like you who would rescue them and care for animals properly,” added another.
