The New York Yankees collapsed to a horrific 8-7 loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday, putting another major dent in their playoff hopes and sparking anger in the fan base over the roles of GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone.
The Yankees led 7-3 going into the last inning – and 7-1 in the sixth – but the Marlins tied the game against Clay Holmes to win against Tommy Kahnle. The Yankees are now five games away from the AL’s final wild card berth and are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
It doesn’t get any easier either. The team then heads to Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves – who currently have the best record in MLB.
But Sunday’s defeat had already sparked unrest in the Yankees fan base and intensified scrutiny of Cashman’s and Boone’s positions.
Many fans on social media called for both to leave the organization — and it comes days after reports suggested that Boone could leave at the end of the season, but not Cashman.
Pressure mounts on Yankees manager Aaron Boone after a terrible loss to the Miami Marlins
Yankees fans took to Twitter after the game to call for the firing of Boone and Brian Cashman
One fan called for the team to completely rebuild for 2024, saying, “Yankees need to clean up for 2024 and get the hell Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman as far away from my team as possible.”
Another said, “Anyone who says fire Boone, I agree, but let’s not give Brian Cashman a free pass. He is the REAL problem, this is his selection he made.
But another fan felt more disappointment with Boone than with Cashman, stating, “Don’t let the fact that Brian Cashman did a terrible job putting this roster together make it obscure the fact that Aaron Boone is a bad manager.”
Another fan responded to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner saying, “How can Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman still have jobs? Hal doesn’t want to win as long as the money keeps rolling in.”
Boone, for his part, tried not to dwell on the fact that his team threw away a win.
“Tough way to end the series, but we have to move on,” Boone said. “We know we have to get victories and as hard as this one is to swallow, you have to stay away from it.”
But star man and Yankees captain Aaron Judge – usually extremely measured in the media – admitted that defeat stung.
“Every time you lose it’s hard, especially in the situation we’re in where every game matters and every game is so important,” said Judge.
“Maybe when the season is over, when it ends, you can think about games like this, but we have to move forward. This one sucks here, especially with the head start we had.
Brian Cashman – the general manager of the Yankees – is also increasingly under scrutiny
Yankees captain Aaron Judge admitted the Marlins’ loss is “suck” given the team’s position
‘It is heavy. You should take your hat off sometime. We have to show tomorrow. We have to learn from it.’
Pitcher Holmes also admitted that the loss could prove to be significant.
The mountain gets bigger with every loss,’ Holmes said. “We need to get some wins and string them together and start some momentum.”
