Furious resident leaves nasty letter for Ironwoman champion accusing her of climbing stairs while exercising at a beachfront park
- A snarky sign aimed at Hayley Bateup has been posted on public stairs
- Mysterious person accuses the iron woman of walking up the stairs during workouts
- Bateup claps back, says she ‘always considers the audience’
A mean local has taken pettiness to the next level by mocking champion ironwoman Hayley Bateup’s personal training business.
A sarcastic sign has been posted at the steps of the Gold Coast Currumbin Alley accusing Bateup of ‘owning’ them.
The steep steps are used by hundreds of runners and walkers every day, and Bateup, along with wife April Zedkulich, uses them as part of her women’s fitness business that operates at the beachfront park, reports The courier mail.
However, a snarky local has objected to the practice and suggests that Mrs. Bateup’s group seize them.
“Notice to people who intend to use these steps to practice – HAYLEY BATEUP OWN THEM,” the sign reads.

Please limit your use of said steps to those times when Mr. (sic) Bateup is not around. Narcissistic traits will become evident in non-compliance.”
A photo of the sign was posted on the Currumbin Community Facebook page on Thursday, sparking a fiery reaction from many who came to Bateup’s defense.
“Oh, how pathetic – as someone who trains with Hayley, I personally know that she is first and foremost a registered paying customer of the Gold Coast Council to use their grounds and contribute to the upkeep,” wrote local Julie Marshall .

“Secondly, we rarely use these stairs…. Third, Hayley is the most caring, courteous trainer who is aware of other people training and always insists we go right, lead, cycle behind everything which has been great as I’ve become more aware of other athletes and finally, why would anyone bother to do this.
“If you have a problem with what you’ve seen or if she’s done, call her to talk instead of dramatizing on a platform to get the keyboard warriors out.”
Another local David Simons wrote, ‘The thing is, Hayley’s been training those kicks for 30 years.
‘The blow-in trainers are the problem, taking over the (picnic) shelters.
“Hayley is a local hero who provides a much-requested service.”

Another commenter suggested that the sign was the work of a rival personal trainer who deliberately called Bateup “sir,” despite the fact that she is female.
“Would I be wrong to conclude that another trainer is targeting Hayley Bateup and calling her a narcissist? Okay, that’s all very funny and clever, BUT calling her a he is out of order. A retraction is in order here!’ They wrote.
However, another woman said she had been working out in the park with friends — “just a bunch of moms trying to get fit” — and “she (Ms. Bateup) had her group practically sitting on top of us.”
But Bateup, who is also a firefighter, had the last word and laughed off the passive-aggressive sign by saying, “So funny, I barely use the stairs.” We actually pay the council to train there, but always keep the audience in mind.
“I actually find this really funny because I wasn’t even there (when the sign was put up). It would be nice if they approached me about this.’
