Chelsea fans have claimed Ian Maatsen's career at the club is 'over' following the winger's recent actions on social media.

The Blues are still recovering from their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night, where Scott McTominay's brace sealed a win for the home side.

Chelsea looked like they were going to get back into the game when Cole Palmer leveled them in the first half, but it was not to be for the Blues.

Most Manchester United players took to social media to celebrate the win, including midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

The Moroccan international thanked fans with an Instagram post but would have been surprised to see one of Chelsea's traveling players also in his comments section.

Surprisingly, Chelsea's Maatsen initially posted a 'fire emoji' and a 'greeting emoji' in response to Amrabat's post, before quickly deleting them.

It led to a number of Chelsea fans criticizing the former Burnley loanee, claiming his days at the club are numbered.

'Ian Maatsen comments on a message from Sofyan Amrabat about United's victory yesterday. Absolute joke,” said another user.

“It must definitely be a mistake on Ian Maatsen or his social media team as I hope players in situations like this read the room and stay away from things like this,” one user wrote.

Maatsen's current contract at Stamford Bridge was due to expire at the end of the season, but according to the club the contract expires Evening standardthe Blues 'quietly' activated a club option to extend it for another 12 months.

As Mail Sport revealed in September, Chelsea accepted a deal that would see the full-back join Burnley on loan, with an obligation on them to buy him for £13.5 million, including add-ons.

However, Maatsen wanted to stay at the club and was prepared to turn down the opportunity to join the Clarets.

Fans were quick to lament Maatsen's decision, claiming his career is 'over now'

Maatsen did not play a single minute of the match despite looking like he was about to be introduced into the match by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Just before United restored their lead in the second half, the cameras were turned off to show Maatsen undressing and preparing to come on.

However, after McTominay headed home from close range in the 69th minute, Pochettino opted to send the full-back back to the bench.

Maatsen hopes he will get the chance to shine on the pitch when Chelsea travel to Everton on Sunday afternoon.
