Angelina looked away from her usual Hollywood glamor when the first pictures of the Maria biopic were released earlier this week.

The actress transformed into the role of legendary opera singer Maria Callas for the film, which will follow her turbulent life and legacy.

In one sneak peek of Angelina as Maria, the actress is makeup-free and wearing thick brown-rimmed glasses and a chunky knit as filming begins.

In another photo, the Mr & Mrs Smith star looks a lot more glamorous with winged eyeliner and a plush fur coat.

Angelina is lucky enough to wear some of Callas’ real clothes in the film, including vintage furs from Massimo Cantini Parrini’s archival collection.

Maria, who was one of the most respected and influential opera singers of the 20th century, passed away in 1977.

The artist was known for her incredible range on stage, as well as her stormy love life which included a romance with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who went on to marry Jackie Kennedy.

“I take the responsibility for Mary’s life and legacy very seriously,” Angelina said in a previous statement. ‘I will give everything I can to meet the challenge.’

The Tomb Raider star also mentioned the film’s director Pablo Laraine, who she said she has ‘long admired’.

The mother-of-six added: “To give her the opportunity to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with Stephen Knight’s script, it’s a dream.”

Jolie has played celebrities before: in 1998, she played tragic supermodel Gia Carangi in Gia, and in 2007, she played Mariana Pearl in The Mighty Heart.

The director, who is best known for the biopics Jackie (about Jackie Kennedy, played by Natalie Portman) and Spencer (about Princess Diana, played by Kristen Stewart), said: “I have the opportunity to combine two of my deepest and most personal passions, cinema and opera , was a long-awaited dream,” said Laraine.

“To do this with Angelina, an extremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity.” A real gift.’
