Angelina opened up about her insecurities about singing opera.

‘I was terrified. But I think it’s a gift as an artist – and I know you felt this in your film too – when you’re just not sure you can do it,” she said.

‘You’re not sure if you’re good enough. The task, the challenge, has been set and you feel small. It’s a gift for an artist…

‘People keep quoting me because I made that mistake, not because I admitted it was some kind of therapy. But it really is.

“Because I didn’t realize that practicing it and learning it is one thing, but finding my voice and making my voice heard was really hard for me.

‘And I was very emotional about it. I didn’t know how much I had lost my voice.

‘Maybe when I lost my mother, maybe when someone hurt me – whatever it was, the different things that had made it smaller and confined.;

The Mr And Mrs Smith actress said in a previous interview that someone she was in a relationship with told her she had no voice.

“So finding it and having it come out was very emotional, and the kind of feeling I would love for anyone to have. I wish everyone knew what you feel when you sing as loud as you can, and that you know what can come out of your body.

“And it’s not just about what you can do in front of an audience or how you tell a story, it’s about being able to make that sound. Maria said something, she said she doesn’t like to hear records because they’re perfect.’

Jolie also opened up about taking her daughter to see Wicked.

“I can’t begin to express some of the joy of this movie that you made,” Brad Pitt’s ex said.

“I remember taking my daughter – some of my kids, but my only daughter – I remember that moment watching Defying Gravity. Because as mothers we want art to have an influence.

“I felt like, ‘Oh, she needs this – she feels this longing to know that there are endless possibilities and something inside her that she hasn’t discovered yet.’

‘This was how I felt at that moment. I loved seeing it live. I loved it when it came to the end of this movie.”

Erivo revealed what it was like to sing live for Wicked.

‘On Broadway you have to perform in the back of the house. You want them to see everything, you want them to be able to read the emotions, so you have to broadcast it. When we were on camera, Jon Chu, our director, threw us off track. There were no tracks; we just agreed to sing live on set… When we were doing a song like ‘For Good’ [for ‘Wicked: Part Two’]a silence fell on my ears, and he said: ‘Just start, and the pianist will come in.’

“We could even include all the breaks in the voice; if it turns into a whisper, then it turns into a whisper, and then you can build from there. That was really the fun of being able to do all that on set, because you could really connect in that moment, change your mind in that moment.”

Erivo about Defying Gravity: ‘There was a huge responsibility, because it is such a well-known song.

“And people know it; people love it. I really wanted to mean it. The physical work was hard because I’m in a harness: I’m flying and I’m singing at the same time – so many things are happening. That was new to me, to figure out how my body, my brain, my voice would all come together to work as one. I was really proud of being able to explore that physical, practical side of it. But I think to get to a point where I could control the words, I really thought about the whole journey to get to that moment.

‘Not just in making this particular project, but also about the journey I took to get here: going to drama school at 20, putting myself through it, finishing at 23, not getting a job and not really being seen and not feeling real. accepted – I felt very strange, very different. And I have to figure out how to get through this on my own, because this business is hard, and this business is really hard when you’re a black girl singing.”
