Ange Postecoglou’s team talks are so inspiring that players want to ‘run through a bowl of spaghetti and stick your head in it’.

So says Australian player Jackson Irvine, who played for the Spurs boss when he was with the Socceroos and praised Postecoglou’s rhetorical gifts.

Postecoglou has Spurs at the top of the Premier League and has received plenty of praise for the way he communicates with players and fans.

Irvine, who plays for Bohemian club FC St. Pauli in Germany’s second tier, revealed that he even did his team talks in Australia early because they were so stimulating they could get players fired.

Irvine said talkSPORT: ‘He used to do his team talks about three hours before the match, before we’d even done the pre-match.

Playing under Postecoglou for Australia, Irvine revealed he gave his speeches three hours early in case his stars got too hyped and were sent off

β€œBecause, honestly, you get so emotional and so excited that you want to run through a plate of spaghetti and stick your head in it.

‘He wanted to hype you up so much that I think it would have been unsafe to send us onto the field straight after one of his conversations. We would have been sent away in about ten seconds!’

The 58-year-old arrived at Spurs with a reputation for verbal prowess when a clip of him giving a speech to his Australian players was shared on social media.

Filmed ahead of a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan in 2015, he said: ‘Think about that person in your life… it could be your mother, father, brother, sister or coach. That person is the one who believed in you more than anyone else.

‘When you start playing, the opposition will also look at the people who made you. You wouldn’t be here today without that person who gave you love and faith.”

His speeches are so admired that Australia brought him back to pump up the Australian players ahead of their recent friendly against England at Wembley.

He told the players: ‘(It’s) the impact you can have for future generations. When you play in a stadium like that you make an impression – it’s not just for you.

“There will be a little boy or a little girl who will look at it and say, ‘One day that will be me.’

Postecoglou won numerous titles around the world and became immensely popular at Celtic, where he won five trophies, including two Scottish Premierships.

Spurs are currently top of the Premier League for goals scored and Postecoglou has already won the Manager of the Month twice, becoming the first ever to win both of the first two available to him.

Irvine added: β€œThe identity of the team that he always tried to instill in us was precisely the belief that we were capable of competing with teams at the highest level. He took that with him everywhere. The way he communicates is so eloquent.”

It makes you wonder what the chances are of James Maddison coming out of the tunnel with spaghetti on his face in Tottenham’s next match against Fulham.
