‘Aussie’ Ange Postecoglou has grown accustomed to being underrated in football circles – and on Friday he left an English journalist red-faced after a barely believable ‘backhand compliment’.
Ahead of this weekend’s away game against Burnley and the transfer deadline, the writer asked the Tottenham manager about ‘Angeball’ and if he had seen pop star Robbie Williams’ recent online tribute.
The problem was that the questions didn’t come across as condescending.
“This club has had some great managers over the years, some historic managers, but you’ve already achieved something that none of them have achieved, because none of them have had a pop song sung about them,” the reporter asked.
“First, do you know Robbie Williams, have you met him, and what did you think when you heard the lyrics had been changed to one of his most famous songs (Angels) and he sang it?”

Despite many opponents feeling Postecoglou would be out of his league in the Premier League, Tottenham are flying high in third place, unbeaten after three games
Postecoglou was initially in disbelief, but the former Celtic and Socceroos boss calmed himself down before firing off a hilarious reply.
“That’s one of the most underhanded, disappointing compliments I’ve ever had,” he said.
“You’ve had some incredibly fantastic managers, big names, successful ones… and then you (Ange.) And have I ever heard of Robbie Williams? Where did I live mate? I mean seriously.
‘Look, I love Robbie Williams, I think he’s brilliant, a great entertainer. He did the song, I think it came from the back of one of our supporters.
“Look, it’s great, the alternative is they make up songs about you that aren’t exactly complementary. “So I’ll take it for what it is, but yeah, thanks mate. I just float out of here feeling good about myself.”
While Postecoglou may have been hurt by the brutal questions, he is said to have been delighted after Spurs brought over Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.
The 22-year-old rising star – who can play as a winger or striker – has signed a six-year contract.
