Ange Postecoglou has criticized his Tottenham team for being ‘wasteful with the ball’ and ‘taking liberties’ despite extending their unbeaten Premier League run with a 2-0 win against Fulham on Monday night.
Son Heung-min opened the scoring on 36 minutes, working his way past the Fulham defense before firing the ball into the back of the net. James Maddison followed to claim his fourth Premier League goal of the season and continued his good form.
Despite now giving themselves a two-point cushion against Manchester City at the top of the table as they extend their unbeaten run to nine games without a loss, the Australian manager reacted fervently after the match.
“It was obviously a good result against a difficult opponent,” he told BBC Sport. ‘We kept our patience, they wouldn’t open too much for us. I thought our pressure was very strong.
‘We were very sloppy with the ball in the second half. We’ve given it away too much. The positive was that our work rate was still excellent.
‘We deviated a little in the second half from the things we were doing all year long. We took some liberties with possession and that allowed them to get back into the game.
‘To be honest, both of our goals came from our press. Our work off the ball was excellent. It has been great all year and that has given us the result.’
Adding in his post-match interview with Air sports he said: ‘The second half wasn’t great for us, we didn’t play anywhere near the level we can with the ball. Without the ball we were still excellent in terms of pressing, but with the ball we were just very wasteful. I think I said before the game that we’ve been very consistent this year, but that’s probably the worst 45 minutes with the ball we’ve had all year.”
