Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Tottenham opted to sign Dominic Solanke over Ivan Toney because they wanted the former Bournemouth striker more.
Postecoglou has confirmed that Spurs were interested in Toney during the summer transfer window, but ultimately decided to sign Solanke for a fee of £65million.
It is believed that both Solanke and Toney have attracted a lot of potential buyers, with Toney leaving for Saudi club Al-Ahli for £40m.
English player Solanke, 27, scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Cherries last season but was determined to step up and compete in European competition.
Postecoglou explained Spurs’ choice: ‘We looked at him but the reality was that Dom [Solanke] is the one I wanted. It took all summer to get him in, but he was the one that fit the profile that we wanted.’

Postecoglou has also urged his supporters to be patient with the striker and not to judge too quickly after his difficult start at the club.
Solanke has yet to score a first goal for Spurs in his three appearances this season, but his manager is confident he will do just that.
“He’s settled in really well,” Postecoglou added. “There’s a lot more to come from him because he’s injured. He’s only played two and a bit games for us.
‘He just needs to play some games. But what I’ve seen in the games he’s played is that he’s going to be a real asset to us.
“I have no doubt that he will make a major contribution.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s record signing Solanke made his debut against Leicester City in the Premier League season opener but suffered an ankle injury.
He missed the games against Everton and Newcastle but made his comeback last weekend in the North London derby, which he lost to Arsenal.
