Jamie Redknapp believes Ange Postecoglou should focus on winning a cup match after Tottenham’s top four hopes were significantly damaged by Liverpool on Sunday night.
Spurs were bowled over by Arne Slot’s red-hot leader as they scored six goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A chaotic clash in north London saw Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz tear Postecoglou’s side apart, bagging a brace each, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Alex Mac Allister also got on the scoresheet.
Strikes from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke made the hammering look a little less one-sided, but the scoreline was hugely flattering for the Lilywhites.
The modesty has left Postecoglou’s side bottom of the table at Christmas, eight points off the Champions League spot, and former Spurs midfielder Redknapp has urged the Australian coach to focus on winning the Carabao Cup.
“He needs a cup,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. ‘He needs a cup now because it seems like the top four are out of the picture.

‘The club hasn’t won a trophy for so long. That’s what he has to think about. He said a lot of quotes lately, but one of them was that he ‘always wins a trophy in my second year.’
Tottenham haven’t won a trophy in 16 years. The last time they lifted silverware was in 2008 when they defeated Chelsea to win the League Cup.
Postecoglou’s side are now just three games away from repeating the feat after winning a seven-goal thriller in Thursday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.
The win saw them earn another date with Slot’s side, who are the current holders, with a two-legged affair taking place in late January and early February.
With Liverpool battling at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League, Redknapp believes Postecoglou should capitalize on the Reds’ other priorities.
‘[They play] a team at Liverpool where you don’t know where Liverpool’s priorities at the moment are clearly the Premier League and the Champions League,” Redknapp added. ‘That’s the least of their priorities, the Carabao Cup.
‘[Tottenham are] First they can get a good result at home, then you go back to Anfield. Then you play against Newcastle or Arsenal.’
Nine managers have tried and failed to take home a trophy at Spurs since Juande Ramos’ success in the 2007-08 season.

They will face current holders Liverpool again in the new year in a two-legged draw
Spurs have reached four finals since they last brought home silverware, losing all four, including three League Cup finals.
Redknapp continued: ‘[If] if you win a trophy here it has legendary status because that’s what the fans really want.”
Tottenham also remain in the Europa League and sit one place away from the automatic qualification places with two games left to play.
Another chance for a trophy could be the FA Cup, where Tottenham will face non-League side Tamworth in the third round on January 12.
