Ange Postecoglou vowed to fight on but admits his beleaguered Tottenham players will need some help and support to get through this difficult period.
“I just feel that at some point we will get a relatively healthy squad and when we do that we will be able to perform consistently at a high level,” the Spurs boss said after his team conceded a late equalizer in a 2-0. 2 home draw against Wolves.
‘We have already shown this year that we can beat anyone. There’s a chance you can go running there. But at the moment that is secondary to the first thing, we have to try to get some support for the players – both mentally and physically and in terms of numbers, to give them the opportunity to play at their best.’
Postecoglou is giving his players two days off to recharge and reset as he works to find reinforcements in the transfer market that opens on Wednesday.
He said: ‘It was always planned. This is the first week where we don’t have a midweek match, so the whole group will probably need a few days to get away from everything and recover, as it’s been quite intense for a very small core group of players, especially over the last four or five weeks.
‘I think it will do them good to have a few days to themselves with their family and give them a chance to recover both mentally and physically.

There was more disappointment for Tottenham as Destiny Udogie picked up an injury
‘I’ll just keep going. “We have work to do and try to get help for these players and our role is to give them everything we can, the support we can, to perform at their best.”
Richarlison and Mikey Moore are expected to return to training this week and Djed Spence returns from suspension, but Destiny Udogie was injured against Wolves and Rodrigo Bentancur picked up a yellow card that will rule him out against Newcastle on Saturday.
As for the results, Postecoglou added: “It hurts me because ultimately I am responsible. I am the person responsible. So of course it hurts.
“When I see how hard they try, it hurts even more because you want them to get a reward and I think they deserved a reward for their efforts, even though they are drawing on their energy reserves.
‘I wanted them to be rewarded for their efforts. So of course it hurts. It hurts enormously. At the same time, it’s my responsibility for where we are now and it’s my responsibility to try to get us out of there.”
