“The second goal is completely my fault,” he said. ‘Of course that can’t happen. But you take it on the chin and try to respond, and in the second half we got back into the game.

‘We had a couple of half-chances, the crowd got up and then we gave Harry Kane half a yard and he put the game to bed.

“I hate to let this team down and that’s what I did tonight. “I hate costing goals and I just didn’t expect the ball to end up at my feet and it just fell to him.”

He continued, “And if you come across Bellingham in the shape he’s in, he’s not going to let you get away with it.

‘I had to apologize to the team and the manager. I did that and I tried to get a positive reaction in the second half. I think I did that, but obviously I’m going to make a fool of myself tonight.”

The match was seen as a big test for Scotland after their stunning form in recent months.

After losing in the World Cup play-off to Ukraine in the summer of 2022, Clarke’s side have been sensational in qualifying for Euro 2024, winning five out of five games so far.

This means they will almost certainly be in Germany next summer and Robertson stressed that the bitter defeat to England should not stop the team’s impressive progress.

He also stressed that Steve Clarke’s side should not lose their momentum despite the defeat

He added: “Today it was individual mistakes that probably cost us. We were disappointing in the first half, but were a lot more competitive in the second.

‘It just shows that we still have room for improvement and that we have to work hard. But it’s important that this doesn’t stop our momentum.

‘The aim this week was to get five wins out of five in the qualifiers and the match against England was not discussed until the match against Cyprus was out of the way (Scotland won 3-0 on Friday).

“We are in a good moment and we have to remember that.”
