In a preview of the book, which will be released on February 28, the Academy Award-nominated actor opened up about his experiences.
“I thought, ‘How cool would it be to fulfill a weird version of a childhood dream,'” he said. “So of course I auditioned and I didn’t really think much in terms of [if] I would get it or not.
When he was called in for a screen test, the job suddenly became real to him.
I suddenly thought, “This could happen. This could be something that will change my life.” Obviously, that created a conflict in the sense of “Do I want to be so recognizable? Do I want to take on this responsibility?”

Then he said, ‘But then of course I did want to! So I decided to do a screen test and throw my hat into the ring.
Andrew first suited up as the main character in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, and two years later, he returned to action for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Eight years later, he got the chance to reprise the beloved character in Marvel Studios’ third Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In the film, he played one of three Peter Parkers, along with fellow web-slingers Tobey Maguire, 46, and Tom Holland, 26.
The Social Network star went on to share his story by admitting he was “really nervous,” but he controlled his nerves by pretending his screen test was just another movie he was making with his friends.
“I guess I made an acting adjustment, which was: you’re 15 years old and you’re doing a Spider-Man short film with friends.
Three Spider-Men: In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Breathe actor suited up alongside the others Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland.
The meme: For their first day on set, the three stars recreated the iconic Spider-Man meme.
All the crew are friends. There is no pressure. You have to make it up as you go along, and it’s about the joy of being this character.’
He added that the decision was made so that “I could trick my ego into taking care of a corner. I convinced the part of me that pushes myself that it wasn’t necessary and that we were just going to go and have a laugh.
“I think that meant that I was able to fully introduce myself and really be present and have a good time. I worked hard on it, but then it was just a matter of throwing it away and seeing what happened.’
Andrew then divulged what it was like working with the other two Spider-Man stars, Tom and Tobey.
Tobey starred in three Spider-Man movies as Peter Parker/Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007 and officially hung up his suit after the third movie.
Tom has played Spider-Man in the Marvel Studios franchise since 2016 and has appeared in six films as the friendly neighborhood superhero, including box office record-breaking Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
“I think Tom and Tobey and I went into this thinking, ‘Well, how is this going to go?’ I’ve had lovely interactions with Tom and Tobey before – not big hangouts, but really sweet moments at parties or events, or as sweet and deep as those things can get, which isn’t much!’
The Link: Andrew shared that everyone came into the film with their own separate stories and relationships with the character.
Returning: Actor Tick, Tick…Boom has costumed himself as the main character three times, for The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Never Let Me Go star went on to say that he got a “really good vibe” from both Tom and Tobey and was excited to see what they would “create together.”
Andrew added that everyone came to the film with their own stories and relationships with the character.
“I think what was really wonderful, and how it played out early on, was that Tobey and I felt very aligned and very clear about what our intentions were for being there,” he said.
“Ultimately, it was serving Tom as an actor and, as characters, serving Tom’s Peter Parker. I think that from that place, everything flowed. It allowed Tobey and I to have a little more fun than we would have had if we were the ones carrying the whole story.’
