Andrew Flintoff agrees reported £9m compensation with BBC after Top Gear crash

Andrew Flintoff has reached a financial settlement with the BBC worth £9 million after he was involved in an accident while filming TV show Top Gear.

The former England and Lancashire cricket star was seriously injured in the crash last December while filming the motor show at his Dunsfold Airfield test track.

The 45-year-old was left with broken ribs and serious facial injuries, leading to the cancellation of the rest of the series and reports that the show will be dropped.

A BBC Studios spokesperson said: “BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie which we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans.

“We have sincerely apologized to Freddie and will continue to support him in his recovery.”

BBC Studios is a commercial company which does not use license fee income from the BBC.

After the incident, Flintoff’s son Corey reportedly said his father was “lucky to be alive” and described it as a “pretty nasty accident.”

The former England captain’s facial injuries were still visible when he began helping the England team as an unpaid consultant in September.

Andrew Flintoff delivered an impassioned speech to bowler Tom Hartley as he presented him with his England ODI cap on his debut against Ireland in September.

Earlier this month he was filmed presenting an England cap to bowler Tom Hartley and spoke publicly for the first time about the incident, calling it the “most difficult time” of his life.

The BBC said in March that it would be inappropriate to resume production of the Top Gear series after an internal investigation into what happened.

It is understood that decisions regarding future episodes of the series will be made “in due course”. Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness joined motoring journalist Chris Harris as hosts of Top Gear in 2019.
